It’s sort of like a better version of peanut butter. You don’t have to buy anything, but frankly, knowing the money supports these women directly makes it feel like a pretty good place to pick up some authentic souvenirs.

Core of the Trip: Lunch with a Berber Family

I mean, for many people, this is the very best part of the day. Instead of going to a regular restaurant, the guide will, more or less, take you to a local Berber family’s home for lunch. The hospitality you experience is just completely genuine. They welcome you onto their terrace, which usually has some of the most stunning views you will see all day, looking out over a valley or up at the snow-capped peaks. Next, they bring out the food. We had a chicken tagine that was cooked so perfectly, it was falling off the bone, and it was served with fresh bread and salads. And of course, there was mint tea, lots of it. Seriously, eating a home-cooked meal while hearing stories about their life is just a very special thing.

Seeing Imlil and the Valleys Nearby

Imlil is basically the main town in this part of the Atlas Mountains. It’s the starting point for people trekking up Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. Your day trip won’t involve that, of course, but you will get a good sense of the area. Typically, your guide will lead you on a short walk, maybe for an hour or so. You might go through walnut groves to a small waterfall or just wander through some of the local villages. You’ll see kids playing and people going about their daily lives. Anyway, it’s a very peaceful and grounded experience. If walking is not your thing, there’s often an option to take a short mule ride, which is kind of fun and gives you a slightly different perspective.
