Of course, you can’t talk about Casablanca without mentioning Rick’s Café. So, our driver took us past it, and it was kind of neat to see in person. But here’s the thing, you know, it’s a recreation. It was apparently built in 2004, so it’s basically a tribute to the film, not the actual spot. We decided not to go in, as we’d heard it was mostly for tourists and a bit pricey, you know. Frankly, we wanted to see things that felt a little more connected to the city’s real life. Still, getting a photo outside was something we sort of had to do.

I mean, the city feels so different from Marrakech. You go from ancient alleys to these big, open boulevards in just a few hours. It’s actually a pretty sharp contrast that really shows you the two faces of Morocco.

The Star of the Show: A Look Inside the Hassan II Mosque

Alright, let’s talk about the main event, the whole reason for the trip: the Hassan II Mosque. Honestly, it’s completely breathtaking, and photos just don’t capture the scale of it. It’s literally right on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, and you can hear the waves from inside, which is just an amazing feeling. The building is just absolutely massive, and the level of detail on every single surface is something you could stare at for hours. I mean, from the carved plaster to the wood ceilings and the tile work, it’s all so finely done.

You have to go in with a scheduled tour group, which is pretty well organized, actually. You, you know, take off your shoes and are led through the main prayer hall, which can hold thousands of people. The guide tells you all about its construction, and as a matter of fact, some of the numbers are just mind-boggling, like how the retractable roof works. Below the main hall, you can see the washing areas, which are almost as impressive with their lines of lotus-shaped fountains. To be honest, standing in that huge, quiet hall was the definite high point of the entire day trip.

A Stroll Along the Corniche and a Taste of Local Life

After the mosque, our driver suggested a drive along the Ain Diab Corniche, which is the city’s waterfront area. It’s basically a long stretch of road with the ocean on one side and a line of cafes, restaurants, and beach clubs on the other. It really felt like a little slice of the French Riviera, you know. We saw families out for a walk, people jogging, and groups of friends just hanging out by the sea. It was kind of nice to just sit and watch the world go by for a bit, totally different from the medina in Marrakech.

For lunch, we stopped at a place right on the water, you know, at the driver’s recommendation. He pointed us to a spot that was clearly popular with locals as well as some tourists. The seafood was so incredibly fresh. We just had some simple grilled fish with some salads, and it was absolutely delicious. Eating with the sea breeze and the sound of the ocean was, in a way, the perfect way to recharge after a busy morning. This part of the day was really relaxed, and frankly, a nice little glimpse into how Casablanca residents spend their downtime.

Is a Private Day Trip to Casablanca Right for You? Some Final Thoughts

So, at the end of the day, deciding if this trip is for you really comes down to your priorities and how much time you have. If you have an extra day and are really curious to see a completely different side of Morocco, then I think you’ll find it worthwhile, you know. The private option makes the long drive very manageable and you can pretty much set your own pace. The Hassan II Mosque is truly a sight to see and, frankly, one of the most incredible religious buildings I’ve ever stood in. It is basically the main reason to go.

On the other hand, if your time in Morocco is short, you might want to spend that extra day soaking up more of Marrakech or maybe heading to the Atlas Mountains. Casablanca, besides the mosque and the corniche, doesn’t have the same concentration of must-see spots for a tourist that other Moroccan cities have, to be honest. It is a city that feels like it’s for living and working, not necessarily for visiting in the same way. The trip is absolutely a commitment; you’re looking at nearly six hours of driving, so you have to be okay with that. It’s really about weighing that travel time against the reward of seeing one of the modern wonders of the country.
