If you’re headed to Madrid and you have any affection for literature or art, you almost need to visit the Literary Quarter. Also called Barrio de las Letras, this zone is just bubbling with history and a special kind of charm. Very simply, it used to be home to some great Spanish writers from way back when. I mean, we’re talking Cervantes, Lope de Vega, and Quevedo – heavy hitters, so too it’s almost like strolling through their old hangout. But, where do you actually start when there’s seemingly a ton to take in? Well, don’t you worry, here are, what I think, are five top spots to get your fix of art and culture in the Barrio de las Letras.

1. Casa de Lope de Vega: Looking into a Literary Life

The Casa de Lope de Vega is basically a portal back in time. This house museum, which was once the home of playwright Lope de Vega, provides such an intimate look into how life could be back in the 17th century. You know, with original furnishings and displays of his works, you really get a solid sense of his day-to-day life. And, as a matter of fact, seeing where he actually penned all those famous plays really does add something to reading his work. Tickets can be had with little or no wait during off peak season, making this something to do in the afternoon.

Plus, there are always talks, lectures, and exhibits happening here, making it sort of a cultural hotspot where you may run into a thing or two. You like your history then go!

Standing tall and proud at the Plaza de Santa Ana, the Teatro Español has definitely been showing off productions for hundreds and hundreds of years, actually. You know, the architecture is pretty grand, so in a way you might just want to pause and enjoy how great it looks. Even better than seeing this amazing building in front of you might be going to an act here. Surrounded by tapas places, cafes and bars, so in some respects, you’ve got such a people-y kind of place here at Plaza de Santa Ana. It might be a perfect place to just post up, have some food, sip a beverage, then see all the city commotion. Additionally, sometimes there will even be street artists doing stuff, adding to just a neat vibe. Find a good place to eat, basically any will do, since food is not really the center.
