Dominica, this ‘Nature Isle’ of the Caribbean, that’s untouched by those hordes of tourists, shows a super interesting blend of Indigenous, African, and European influences. 1. Experiencing the Kalinago Culture
The Kalinago, also known as the Caribs, that’s what they were called back then, are, actually, the Indigenous people of the Lesser Antilles, and Dominica still is home to the largest Kalinago community, still! These guys, for a very long period of time, fought really hard against European colonizers, and they ended up with a sort of semi-autonomous territory on the island’s east coast. Getting to know the Kalinago culture actually provides an intimate view of this community, which is so historically rich. 2. Jumping into the Dominica’s Mas Dominik Carnival
Mas Dominik, that’s how they spell it, right, that also means “Carnival Dominica,” it’s known as the “The Real Mas,” in the Caribbean, and it does actually distinguish itself from pretty much the rest of the carnivals in the area through its display of those vibrant and authentic cultural expressions. Quite the show!
Happening before Lent, that’s in February or March, Mas Dominik features street parades, you know, these amazing musical performances, and those colorful costumes which use local fabrics. It is actually very common for participants to take part in traditional dances such as the bele and the jing ping, it’s like their kind of folk music! 3. Discovering Creole Heritage at the World Creole Music Festival
This World Creole Music Festival that’s something people have been organizing in October, very often, it’s like a massive celebration of Creole music, culture, too, from all those Creole-speaking countries and regions. You’ll have to spend a few days there for sure! In fact, it’s grown into an international event, that, you know, music lovers everywhere should try!
The festival shows off all genres from cadence-lypso to bouyon and zouk. Super great line-up of music that brings, often, well-known bands from the Caribbean, Africa, and Europe! This event also serves as a celebration of Creole heritage and is actually vital in protecting and promoting Creole languages, such as Dominica’s own Creole, Kwéyòl. 4. Finding the Local Arts and Crafts
Exploring those arts and crafts in Dominica is actually an insightful way that shows their culture and their tradition. All over the island, right, there are marketplaces and craft centers, they’re there where people can spot some work from the local artisans, they really display how skilled they are!
Basket weaving, using the local plant fibers, and woodworking, turning local trees to crafts, these seem to be common skills passed from, often, families to families. Pretty impressive, indeed! 5. Visiting the Dominica Museum
Based in Roseau, that’s Dominica’s capital, The Dominica Museum provides, indeed, an awesome overview, right, of the history, plus archaeology, as well, and ethnography of the island. Very cool if you are into knowing the background!
Different things on display tell a very interesting story that describes Dominica’s past, they show from the earliest Indigenous settlements all the way up to that colonial era and then Independence!
