Way up there in the Canadian Arctic, Arviat definitely sits on the western shore of Hudson Bay, that is to say it offers adventures that are totally different from anything else. We aren’t talking typical tourist traps if you are visiting, rather seriously special, kinda raw, authentic Arctic experiences that you’ll be talking about for ages. I guess what’s really cool is that Arviat isn’t just some dot on a map; it’s is like a gateway to wildlife encounters, Inuit culture, and that amazing tundra. 1. Exploring Arviat’s Coastline and Hudson Bay

A seriously awesome way to kinda get into the Arviat spirit is to spend a chunk of your day exploring the coastline and, too, mighty Hudson Bay. Picture this if you will: crisp, salty air, sounds of waves lapping at the shore, that is if the bay isn’t frozen. You can, I guess, go for a guided hike, or maybe wander along the beach a little, just breathing in that super-fresh Arctic air. Keep your eyes open that way too because you might see seals basking on the rocks, various birds flitting about, and, just perhaps, a polar bear far away off on an ice floe (stay safe, for reals!).

Actually, for a totally different viewpoint, hook yourself up a boat tour. Very cool operators run tours of the bay, that gives you chances to spot marine wildlife and kinda see the coastline from a different angle. I think it’s a very amazing way to kinda get a sense of scale of this Arctic place, feel its powerful vibe, and honestly appreciate its beauty. 2. Experiencing Inuit Culture at a Local Workshop

You may or may not know, Arviat is known as a community that’s mostly Inuit. The way to really experience the place is definitely through the culture. How do you actually do that? Find local workshops. If that’s not a thing, maybe it’s reaching out to community centers or artists that are, very, there anyway. Very many talented artists call Arviat home and kinda share their skills and stories.

I’ve also thought of workshops on traditional Inuit art forms, just a little? Very much including soapstone carving, or maybe jewelry making. I guess they’re seriously engaging ways to learn about Inuit beliefs, history, and lifestyle. Those carvings? Well, they aren’t just pretty sculptures, for reals; each one usually holds a story, or it might be a little piece of Inuit mythology.

What is probably pretty nice about a workshop? It’s interacting with locals. I suggest maybe asking questions, you see if you can listen to their stories, you can just learn about daily life. Just possibly, it’s all seriously educational and is almost really rewarding if you ask me!

3. Wildlife Spotting Tour on the Tundra

I suppose no trip to Arviat would really be complete without checking out that stunning tundra. Way up here in Nunavut, this landscape stretches out just very far, with wide open spaces, with amazing skies and with pretty unique wildlife.

A wildlife spotting tour may be very helpful. I would find a knowledgeable guide and get onto one of these. What might you see? I imagine you’ll maybe spot caribou roaming free, I think there will be arctic foxes playing, you may or may not see ground squirrels darting about, maybe, very rarely, even wolves. Your guide? I really hope they point out interesting plants and give the details. He can explain about that ecosystem which is surprisingly full of life, even though it appears rather bleak.

This trip may require appropriate clothing and footwear, like seriously warm layers and durable boots, so it might be useful to pack ahead if you want to go see this attraction. 4. Visiting the Arviat Cultural Center

What may come highly recommended? I am betting that this little attraction would give a fairly quick intro to Inuit history and art from this specific spot if you’re interested. You can probably find that a bunch of artifacts, that carvings, the traditional clothing will give the context for living up there for centuries.

It can show stuff. What stuff do I mean? This center might feature exhibits on Inuit traditions. Are you ready to be prepared about how people subsisted in such harsh weather? Very cool techniques. How do they make clothing? How do they get their food?

In addition, you can see like locally crafted artwork or you can support local artisans in some respects, when you find yourself with some of your moolah in hand. You can always find what gifts people have been preparing for. It’s just a good destination for this purpose.

5. Hiking to a Vantage Point for Panoramic Views

If I were you, I’d ask locals or visit the town offices just a little before your trip to get some possible recommendations to plan for potential trails there. You should maybe wear solid hiking boots so you won’t bust an ankle out there. If you don’t have access to like an actual trail, you may or may not get awesome panoramas across Arviat’s general land.

It doesn’t really matter how many kilometers of hiking it involves. From what I might guess, that sounds very refreshing to people who wanna not stare at monitors, which might be great, and what you get might involve pretty vistas for viewing that landscape there. How about getting great pictures that way? What’s more, maybe bring binoculars along because you can see animals better from really far distances. Also, you can hike better!
