The Banksy Effect: Street Art Tour

When folk bring up Bristol, so you almost can’t go too far without the name Banksy popping up. Banksy, is that globally known, but yet, still fairly anonymous street artist, started here, and you still see some of his earlier works dotted around the city today. You, kind of, won’t get any authorized Banksy tour, but a little wander with the head up is actually plenty to take in the scope of his influence and just find art in almost unexpected corners. Start out towards the harbourside, so you just go past the M Shed, or down towards Stokes Croft, very much known for its quite alternative vibe. Anyway, do keep eyes peeled for other, newer artists’ works; it is almost certain that a new generation have been inspired by Banksy.

Banksy Bristol

You know, I kind of remember walking around Stokes Croft with my friend Sarah last summer. So, we were really on a mission to see as much street art as we could find. What began as a ‘quick walk’ ended up being almost a full afternoon adventure, so we took constant stops, mouths wide open at these ever transforming murals, political comments, and pieces that seemed totally random at first. What I learned is that, Stokes Croft, it actually moves and breathes. It also felt, maybe even to Sarah too, to be something right from the heart of the Bristol’s unique and seriously outspoken voice.

If you want the local take, you are almost guaranteed to find it at the M Shed.

M Shed Bristol

I still recall actually visiting M Shed that last time Bristol hosted its annual Harbour Festival. A lot of boats came over into the harbor, or there was seriously vibrant live music. Now, inside M Shed, so I kind of remember being just engrossed to some exhibitions all about how Bristol became what we know it as today – especially when you contrast this with all that modern day celebration outside its walls. That time they held one exhibition, I believe, covering the Bristol film industry which definitely took me by a fair surprise as it isn’t really the first place people go to thinking film! That’s the really great thing in it; it always shows sides of Bristol so you perhaps aren’t really that ready for!

Also there are dinosaur exhibits that will blow, in a way, younger and not quite so young minds!

Bristol Museum & Art Gallery

Very late in autumn I actually spent some hours at this museum alone, really just wandering wherever things drew my attention. You find something about, is that, the very range there, and so how anything can be on the way from fairly detailed geological samples onto, seemingly out of nowhere, paintings done by masters. Oh yeah, a lot of paintings, yet! The gallery itself is gorgeous as well, I ought to add; this beautiful older architecture really does something amazing for the arts displayed. Then I popped for a break and just had tea down in that ground floor cafe – a little me time. You get that here; it may be a day alone out, and it almost just becomes magical! It is the mix from peace in among all that thought provoking wonder, maybe? Or perhaps its tea; more research is required! Seriously though it gets my vote as that city hub.

Spike Island art space

Once in spring, yet, with camera almost strapped on, I did actually participate on some opening happening down by the Spike Island art spot. Is that how, at every point, that, anything I had ever imagined as “art scene” came so close when compared to reality! The pieces exhibited were not just interesting however the sheer number involved or doing exhibited work all shared the similar space gave real “anything happens” feelings! Very long before anything was done, or before having to read one single placard (oh yes, so many words there) or anything, you find yourself thinking how truly anything artistic could come straight away from places you almost didn’t ever think about going beforehand!

Arnolfini arts Bristol

You find somewhere almost a stones skip away directly at water. Very late at cold night one October when all I managed towards achieve by walking at that harbors was freezing. That is to mean that I literally found myself basically almost stumbling right within door found there at Arnolfini out towards warming yourself! Thankfully what place does appear more beautiful or comforting then I was able to fully stop for finding new work display along that moment on. Show from such art forms all around or across world; you feel that the location works hard at placing modern view that may easily prompt that viewer by some fashion whether it looks towards thinking something current or simply understanding art generally a touch differently!
