Nelson, British Columbia; it’s a charming little mountain town that’s really got something for anyone that appreciates a spot of fresh air. So, whether you like hitting the trails or getting out on the water, there’s almost certainly an adventure waiting. That’s what I reckon anyway, because having spent a fair bit of time exploring Nelson’s back country, I can actually tell you about the activities that really make it tick.

Hit the Trails: Hiking near Nelson

Nelson is actually ringed by mountains, so that also means trails abound, you know? Arguably, Pulpit Rock is like your very classic, gotta-do hike. It’s a fairly quick climb, not too exhausting you see, that rewards you with a very stunning lookout over town and Kootenay Lake. You might want to think about the time of the year that, you know, you want to consider doing this hike, though? Because, honestly, in the summer months; that trail can be pretty busy.

Now, for something with just a bit more solitude, or say more of a workout; I think you really want to look at the trails in Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park, just, you know, a short drive away. The Gibson Lake Trail has almost become a favourite. Not that I know all that much but it winds its way up to a beautiful alpine lake, where you can generally catch glimpses of glaciers. How’s that? Is that interesting? Remember that weather in the mountains can very quickly change, so just make sure that, you know, you have all the appropriate gear and are aware of the conditions before you head out there. Two Wheels are Better: Mountain Biking

The mountain biking close to Nelson, oh I don’t know, it’s legendary, if I had to say? That place is packed with a massive network of trails that suits basically, honestly, all ability levels, you see. You could say that the Nelson Cycling Club has obviously put in some serious work in terms of maintaining and adding trails, to boot? Now, you’ll probably think that there’s an abundance of options out there. As a matter of fact, you should probably look into checking out the trails on Morning Mountain.

What about this though; these trails can be super flowy and provide pretty sweet views? In the meantime, the trails down on the lower slopes, or what, tend to be more technical, alright? Another, maybe popular destination has got to be the nearby area of Ymir. That’s south of Nelson. You know, just picture some really old-school, rough-and-tumble singletrack riding that’ll absolutely challenge even, say, an experienced rider. Make sure, just make sure you wear a helmet, take plenty of water, so; and also, that, you know, you give right-of-way to uphill traffic. Pretty normal. Paddle Power: Kayaking and Canoeing on Kootenay Lake

Alright, if you were keen to have a go out on the water; well Kootenay Lake offers just such a splendid setting for a spot of kayaking and canoeing, maybe? In some respects, its pristine waters are often ringed by these pretty mountains that tend to create very unforgettable scenery. Anyway, from Nelson, in general, there are several access points to the lake, or even for just a paddle along the shoreline. To be honest, there are a lot of sheltered bays to go see. This is especially the case when you aren’t wanting to brave those wider stretches of water.

Of course, bear in mind, so; Kootenay Lake is arguably huge, and can just, I don’t know, become really rough when the wind picks up. So, just think about checking the marine weather forecast prior to heading out? And certainly, wear a PFD. If you actually need to rent a kayak or canoe, or need like your very own guided tour, maybe you want to then find an outfitter in Nelson. A River Runs Through It: Whitewater Rafting

If you think you need like, just like, more of an adrenaline rush than you probably want to then check out the whitewater rafting that happens on the rivers around Nelson, alright? Loads of rivers around. Anyway, the Slocan River is actually a super popular choice. It’s got sections that suit beginners right up to maybe more experienced rafters too. With the occasional stretch that is fast-flowing.

Usually you find that there is also the option to head further afield to the slightly more challenging Kicking Horse River for something really exciting. So, basically, if you haven’t ever done this before, just look for a reputable tour operator to generally make sure you get a very safe and also very fun trip down the river. Almost any one, almost, will generally provide all the equipment that you require and that’s not only just that, there’s always certified guides that can lead you. Cast a Line: Fishing Opportunities

For a spot of a slower pace, maybe? Arguably, you should consider taking the chance to do some fishing, ok? Now, Kootenay Lake itself, it’s arguably world-renowned for its, well it used to be; Gerrard rainbow trout; the lake really holds a variety of other types of fish too. Anyway, if you aren’t looking to stay just on the lake then try your hand at fishing on the Slocan River for example, which in particular, well; is kinda renowned for its bull trout. You see, getting a local fishing guide can usually enhance your experience and sometimes; I don’t know, improve your chances of getting that, kinda, pretty sizable catch.

It is important you find out about the fishing regulations before you actually get started too? As in, getting a license that would be correct? To make things easier to understand too, different areas are going to have specific rules and catch limits. Do I know why? No. Actually, remember to then pack your sunscreen.
