1. Barichara & Guane: Stepping Back in Time

Barichara Colombia streets

Okay, Barichara? First off, you’ve just got to visit it, honestly. It might be, basically, the prettiest small town, kinda, I saw in Colombia. Actually, this, that, quaint little colonial number’s streets are, kind of, covered with cobblestone, like, seriously, the old buildings have, actually, terracotta roofs, you know, that, you could definitely just, kinda, get lost staring. Obviously, there are full day tours taking you from Bucaramanga. The tours usually swing you over to Guane, very, that, smaller town, pretty close by.

Now, the cool part is, really, you, yourself can actually walk between these towns, too it’s almost. Like, the hike goes on, typically, what’s seemingly a very ancient path they actually call “El Camino Real”. Just FYI, very, that, stone pathway was actually paved hundreds of years back by an actual german guy, you know, you are walking, you know, almost literally, in history. So, pack water.

FYI, you’ve gotta prepare before you head here: El Cocuy basically lives in super high altitude. This basically involves lots of, really, glaciers, super high peaks. This, basically, isn’t your kinda, relaxed park stroll type thing. Arguably, the hikes are, kind of, more long term commitments, you know, this place provides, very, sights very, most hikers think, kind of, should belong only in, you know, Switzerland, somewhere. Usually the day tours departing from Bucaramanga actually usually involve quite a journey, which means traveling overnight too it’s almost.

Very, something cool about this place; so the indigenous groups that call, actually, this area home believe quite strongly the park is sacred. Basically, treat it carefully.
