Top Old Town Day Trips: Reviews & Recommendations

Old Town

Planning a day away to a captivating old town is almost like stepping into a storybook, you know? It’s an escape that combines history, and it also blends architecture, plus maybe a bit of that quaint charm. It is pretty unique. I wanted to share some thoughts on a handful of fantastic “old town” getaways, all of which promise a really unforgettable experience.

Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic

Cesky Krumlov

First up, there is Cesky Krumlov. This amazing spot in the Czech Republic it’s almost like time stood still, if that makes sense? So, it’s a gorgeous medieval town that’s also a UNESCO World Heritage site. With its twisting lanes, and a really huge castle looming over it, plus the pretty Vltava River kind of snaking around it, the town’s almost like something from a movie set, I mean truly. It actually is very fairytale-esque, which is amazing for those picture-perfect vacation snapshots you might want.

I suggest, too it’s almost impossible to resist getting wonderfully lost in all the town’s colorful, winding streets. It actually adds a little something extra. Definitely tour Cesky Krumlov Castle; it is very grand, actually, and full of history, and it gives you really amazing views. Perhaps give yourself a bit of a treat, you know? Try to visit one of those traditional pubs. Sample the hearty Czech food and the, maybe, some local beer; as a matter of fact that stuff is usually pretty darn good.

San Gimignano, Italy

San Gimignano

Next, maybe it’s worth talking about San Gimignano in Tuscany, Italy. So, the landscape is kind of unforgettable. You should picture rolling hills plus vineyards, yet throw in a town with medieval towers that are like rising high above everything, I’m serious. It is pretty darn special, actually. The city’s skyline that I saw makes it pretty unique, that you likely won’t see somewhere else all that quickly, which means that your photos would absolutely “pop” for this destination, actually. We liked it!

Here is some stuff to do, arguably. Check out the Piazza della Cisterna. Actually, sample the gelato (it’s typically phenomenal). Make sure you check out the Duomo, that’s, actually, that beautiful collegiate church and the bell tower within the same church, really.

Quebec City, Canada

Quebec City

Fancy something a bit more North American, maybe, too? Quebec City is really pretty lovely. Quebec’s such a charming place; the place actually kind of comes alive due to its, like, historic district that includes cobblestone streets, as well as, also the wonderful French-speaking vibe.

Definitely tour the Citadelle. It provides some, perhaps, remarkable views, really, especially right before night. Also consider doing a tour on foot to basically “eat and drink” some of the neat local delights around that tourist center core.

Tallinn, Estonia

Tallinn

It might just be me but Tallinn, that wonderful town in Estonia, really combines Northern Europe plus all that rich history you maybe crave. The “old town,” you know, that area, has buildings and such that are perfectly reserved plus the place just happens to be so easy to basically explore by just walking around the town; so, it really adds to that vacation experience, is that, basically?

See Alexander Nevsky Cathedral; definitely get a view up high from Toompea Hill, so too, arguably, perhaps get to enjoy all that classic Estonian fare (that’s, actually, generally, delicious if you select just right, honestly.)

Shirakawa-go, Japan

Shirakawa-go

Last up? I liked Shirakawa-go (I just like how that thing rolls right off my tongue). Anyhow, this particular neat old-fashioned Japanese place happens to be known basically for its “gassho-style” farmhouses, honestly, which have, kind of, big thatched roofs. Shirakawa-go tends to provide something unlike everything else you likely tend to find anywhere, I think, basically. Its beauty simply provides a wonderful, perhaps peaceful alternative as part of a vacation destination or maybe, something else of interest if the other locations did not hit you just right.

Arguably you should walk by Ogimachi Village. Climb to the Shirakawa-go Observation Deck; be sure to get to see the Gassho-style farmhouses from the inside, even.
