Western Norway, that is, with its fjords cutting through enormous peaks and its glittering glaciers, almost seems like it’s made for folks who love being outside. If you’re after fresh air, incredible views, and maybe even a little bit of a challenge, then this is basically where you want to be. I mean, really, there’s so much to do it’s hard to narrow it down, still, let’s try to point you to some of the absolute best outdoor activities this spot has to offer.

Hiking the Iconic Trolltunga

The Trolltunga hike, you know, that’s a truly classic Norwegian experience. It might be demanding, too it’s nearly a 28 km round trip, and yet the payout is just stunning. Imagine you’re stood on this rock that juts out way, way over Lake Ringedalsvatnet; well that alone gives you some seriously killer views. Apparently, the hike usually takes about 10-12 hours, so then again, it’s really important to be reasonably fit and totally prepared.

I recall reading about a friend, who decided to make the trek during shoulder season. She mentioned that the weather switched up without notice, it was sunny, and then a few moments later, she had some icy rain! Really, you’re going to want waterproofs, layers, basically some really durable hiking boots. And remember to get there real early because the trail can get somewhat busy, mostly during peak season. A local guide can honestly add so much, like stories about the region’s history and of course safety tips – that’s always worthwhile.

Kayaking Through the Nærøyfjord

Picture this: You are paddling your way quietly through one of the narrowest fjords in the world. The Nærøyfjord, that is, with its steep cliffs and those powerful waterfalls, offers pretty much an unforgettable kayaking experience. The water is typically incredibly calm, which in a way makes it well suited for any experience level. You can mostly choose between guided tours and solo paddles. A guided tour I think, would be, a great shout because of the local insights, that really does add another layer to what you’re seeing. Very frequently they explain all the local wildlife, perhaps something about the history of the tiny fjord side villages, or stories connected to Viking times. Really, floating along with views up toward the farms balancing right on the steep hillsides can feel like you’re going straight into a painting.

One sunny afternoon I took this route; in that case, what got me was the intense stillness and you know, you could also hear the echoes bouncing off of the rock walls. And seals would pop their little faces up above the water, basically keeping an eye on you while you passed by. Very arguably, there are fewer greater feelings of peace and complete calm.

Glacier Hiking on Folgefonna

If you are keen on experiencing something seriously unique, that is, something super memorable, consider getting yourself up onto Folgefonna Glacier. It’s almost one of Norway’s biggest glaciers, plus you know, you can actually hike on it. Often you will be suited up with crampons, a harness, too a guided tour means a super safe experience. Actually seeing ice formations, such as ice caves, and getting knowledge, like about glacial formation is pretty amazing.

I had read something about how global warming is affecting these giants. So in some respects getting close to see it up close does help in a way to show how important it actually is for our planet that we do look after it better. Then again you get great views from the top too, basically out over the fjords. That sort of experience is totally beyond anything else.

Climbing the Via Ferrata in Loen

Are you a fan of some pretty wild climbing that has views that go on and on forever? Right then, Loen Via Ferrata is actually where you probably ought to head. You will be scaling the mountain Hoven using metal steps and cables fixed to the rock; of course, this will let people who aren’t quite expert climbers feel what that’s all about, whilst remaining reasonably safe. Obviously the views as you move higher are seriously unbelievable – with the fjord down below and the peaks all around you.

It’s more or less suitable for the everyday person, just so long as you’ve got this slight urge for some excitement and heights. A little while back my cousin attempted this; he’d told me that clipping and unclipping from each cable, was honestly both scary and then fun at the same time. Apparently, the Gjølmunnebru suspension bridge, apparently, that’s one of the longest Via Ferrata bridges worldwide. Honestly the reward once you get to the top is so, so worth it.

Biking the Rallarvegen (Navvies’ Road)

Fancy seeing Norway at a relaxed pace? So, cycling the Rallarvegen, basically the old railway construction road, gives a pretty unique experience. The route extends from Haugastøl down to Flåm or Voss, passing through seriously scenic mountainscapes. Now you don’t need to be incredibly fit to have a pretty amazing time here, too the trail for the most part is rather smooth. However, very frequently the mountain weather will decide otherwise, so you have to pack with it in mind.

My colleague rented some mountain bikes while he and a few of his family where passing through – he says the views while pedalling by were outstanding – anyway, the kids all were cheering as they bombed through tunnels, with those super rocky landscapes alongside. The sense that you are pedalling your way through genuine Norwegian history is quite amazing. As a matter of fact, it’s the most gorgeous means of seeing this part of the nation.
