Venezuela Car Tours: Top 5 Unforgettable Road Trips

Thinking of hitting the road in Venezuela? So, that could be a really awesome idea. Venezuela, in some respects, has these crazy diverse landscapes, from its tropical coasts to the really awesome Andes Mountains and, don’t forget, its huge plains. Getting around in a car means you get to see quite a lot. Here’s a little rundown of five car tours that, arguably, give you some really good snapshots of what Venezuela is all about.

1. The Coastal Route: Caracas to Choroní

Alright, kick things off near Caracas, so the trip to Choroní is fairly iconic. You, typically, start with the somewhat crazy city views before you climb over a fairly green mountain range. As a matter of fact, the roads wind down, a little, until you hit this almost picture-postcard coastline. Then, it is that Choroní is super charming, it’s almost like this little colonial town that looks as if it’s paused in time. Then too it’s that you get black sand beaches, really like Playa Grande, which could be, you know, good for soaking up sun and such.

The feel here, I mean, is quite laid-back. You know, I remember just wandering around the little plaza, taking it easy, watching the fishermen get their boats ready. Anyway, what really stands out is this contrast. Clearly, it’s there in the journey itself – city hustle transforming into a sleepy beach vibe in like, honestly, just a matter of hours. It’s very cool. Clearly, it’s popular, though, so, as a matter of fact, booking your stay beforehand is probably a smart move.

2. Los Llanos Adventure: A Safari on Wheels

So, want something totally different? That, apparently, is Los Llanos. That massive, kind of flat area in central Venezuela? Well, in that case, it feels a lot more like an African safari than how people usually see South America, I find. What’s quite something is that the wildlife is bonkers. Obviously, the place is crawling with caimans, capybaras… Then again, bird watchers almost lose their minds because there are so many different kinds of birds. It’s really quite impressive.

Then, it is that getting a 4×4 might be a pretty good shout here. It is almost as if, the further you go, you need something that can actually deal with a bit of rough terrain. Usually, too it’s that tours start around places like Barinas or San Fernando de Apure. Obviously, I did one where we spent a few nights in a very simple “hato,” which, for instance, is, sort of, like a cattle ranch. It’s pretty immersive, alright? As a matter of fact, spending nights out there means hearing all those crazy sounds the wildlife makes when the sun drops. It is, pretty much, a trip you won’t forget quickly.

3. Gran Sabana: Through Ancient Plateaus

Now, it might be that Gran Sabana is something for landscape lovers. First, it begins where southeastern Venezuela sort of brushes against Brazil and Guyana. Clearly, the highlight is those tabletop mountains they call “tepuis.” You get fairly sweeping grasslands, jungles… anyway, it looks totally prehistoric, arguably. Probably the best one to go see is Angel Falls, is that right? Well, apparently, you can fly over it. Apparently, the local indigenous Pemón communities can help arrange these treks and all sorts of stuff too.

Honestly, though, parts of the road here aren’t amazing. Anyway, what some do is drive from Ciudad Bolívar and stop off at different spots to hike and view things. It’s more or less, a real nature blast. Apparently, anyway, fuel can be a bit sparse in certain areas. Probably the best idea, in fact, is stocking up beforehand. Still, just the scenery alone is very well worth the possible issues.

4. The Andean Circuit: Mérida and Beyond

Then, are you after some mountain air? Is that right? The region around Mérida probably fits the bill, you see. Seemingly, Mérida, that place, is kind of a hub for a ton of pretty interesting stuff in the Andes. I am sure you heard something similar. It, clearly, is surrounded by crazy mountain views. As a matter of fact, if you, for example, ride the cable car up to Pico Espejo, well, I can only recommend it for vistas, clearly. Is that something that may please you?

Well, here and there, little villages hide along those slopes too, I think. As I was saying, there’s places like Los Nevados which tend to have, like, donkeys, a little. We’re not just talking amazing vistas; anyway, this loop goes through what some might refer to as picturesque villages, is that right? Alright, yeah, anyway, it winds all the way, sort of. What may or may not be of relevance is to sort of prepare for winding roads if you might plan on trying any driving here.

5. Caribbean Beaches: From Puerto la Cruz to Mochima National Park

Maybe what appeals is bouncing along some pretty beachfront stuff? So, heading eastward along the coast from Puerto la Cruz puts you dead center in that. In a way, Mochima National Park has plenty of nice islands and spots to swim or check out sea life, right? A few places have calm waters that usually would just look good in photographs, alright?

What’s the deal then? It tends to be that boats that go around from spots like Mochima or Santa Fe get you close to all that. By the way, you also got the roads themselves going past little beaches and overlooks, is that so? It is nearly a very stress-free approach to find some great sun and sand. Even so, for that matter, what you could easily do is go check for local spots. If that may prove not up to snuff anyway, you, still, almost are able to jump onto a boat for seeing secluded stretches. You know, is that great or what?
