Basically, you have these gigantic rock pillars rising up out of the ground, and on top of them are centuries-old monasteries. It just looks like something from a fantasy movie, you know? The tour usually takes you to visit two or three of the six active monasteries. We found that getting inside was an adventure in itself, climbing up a lot of steps carved into the rock. Of course, the best part is just standing on one of the balconies and looking out at the view. I mean, you can see the other rock towers and monasteries all around you. Day 5: The Scenic Drive Home and Final Impressions
So, the last day is mostly about the trip back to Athens, but it’s actually not just a boring drive. The route chosen is pretty scenic, and there is one very memorable stop along the way. We stopped at Thermopylae, which, as a matter of fact, is where the famous battle with the 300 Spartans happened. There’s a monument there to King Leonidas, and it’s a really powerful spot to stand for a few minutes and just think about that piece of history. After that, it’s a straight shot back to the capital. You know, you get dropped off in the late afternoon, with plenty of time to catch a flight or continue your Greek vacation. Looking back, the five days were a whirlwind, sort of. You see so much in a really short amount of time, but the whole thing is managed so you don’t feel too rushed. You definitely get a good taste of mainland Greece, from its ancient past to its breathtaking natural formations.
