Honestly, it’s one of those spots you might just drive right past without a second thought. My first time there, as a matter of fact, was a complete surprise. You can literally hear the waves lapping the shore without a hundred other sounds fighting for your attention, which is a real treat. This bay is actually part of a protected national park, you know, so the Mesoamerican Reef just offshore acts like a natural barrier. That is why the water tends to be pretty gentle and great for a relaxing swim. For instance, you can often see little schools of fish darting around right by the shore. Finding Your Perfect Spot: Where to Stay

So, when you are looking for a place to stay, the options in Bahia Petempich are pretty much centered around all-inclusive resorts. The choice you have is that some are seriously huge properties, almost like little towns with multiple pools, a ton of restaurants, and activities scheduled from morning until night. On the other hand, you can also find smaller, more intimate boutique-style resorts that feel a little more personal. You really need to just think about what kind of vacation experience you are looking for. Basically, there is something here for more or less every type of traveler, whether you want endless entertainment or a quiet hideaway.

For example, during my last visit, I decided on a mid-sized resort, and it was pretty much a perfect fit for what I wanted. You know, the staff were incredibly welcoming and somehow seemed to remember my name after just a day. The food options were actually really impressive, unlike some of the mega-resorts where the buffets can feel a bit generic and mass-produced. You could, for instance, find a quiet lounge chair by the adult pool at almost any time of day, which was honestly a big plus for me. Okay, obviously, the biggest draw here beyond the sand is the Mesoamerican Reef, which is the second-largest barrier reef system in the world, and it’s just right there offshore. You can actually book a snorkeling or a shallow water scuba tour with local guides from Puerto Morelos, which is literally just a short drive away. To be honest, it is an amazing experience to float above the coral formations and see all the sea life. You will definitely see more than you expect, like so many brightly colored fish, maybe a sea turtle, and stuff. It feels like you’ve dropped into a completely different world, and you sort of have.

By the way, you should absolutely make time to go into the town of Puerto Morelos. It still has, like, a very authentic fishing village character that is really charming. You can wander around the main square, which is always full of life, check out the famous leaning lighthouse, and browse the little shops. The vendors are pretty low-key, unlike in other tourist towns. There are also lots of street food stalls, and honestly, you might find some of the best tacos of your life right there. It’s just a really great way to spend an afternoon or evening and get a feel for the local culture.

Anyway, when you’re in this region, you are also incredibly close to the famous “Ruta de los Cenotes.” So, this is basically a road that stretches west from Puerto Morelos and is lined with dozens of these incredible natural swimming holes formed from collapsed limestone caves. For instance, some cenotes are wide open to the sky and feel like secret jungle pools, while others are hidden deep within underground caves. We visited one called Cenote La Noria, and it was just sort of a magical experience, swimming in the cool, clear water. It is definitely something you should plan a whole day for, really, because each one is a little bit different.

A Taste of the Yucatan: Food and Drink

Okay, so let’s talk about the food, because that’s a big part of any trip. The meals you’ll find in the all-inclusive resorts are generally pretty solid. You know, you get a lot of variety, with buffets, snack bars, and different themed a la carte restaurants for dinner. But frankly, you are doing yourself a disservice if you don’t get out and try the local food in Puerto Morelos. The flavors are just completely different and feel so much more connected to the region. We found a little beachfront restaurant, and I mean, the fresh-caught fish served with garlic sauce was absolutely unforgettable.

For example, there are some specific dishes you just have to try while you’re there. Look for cochinita pibil, which is a traditional slow-roasted pork marinated in citrus and achiote paste—it is incredibly tender and flavorful. Also, you should seek out sopa de lima, a really refreshing chicken and lime soup that is a local specialty. You can basically find these items at most authentic Mexican restaurants in town. And of course, you have to stay hydrated with some fresh fruit juices, which they call aguas frescas. Drinks like jamaica (hibiscus tea) or horchata (a sweet rice milk drink) are honestly so delicious and just perfect for the tropical heat.

Getting Around and Tips for Your 2025 Visit

To be honest, figuring out the logistics is fairly simple. You will probably fly into Cancun International Airport (CUN), which is actually very convenient and just a short 20 to 25-minute drive away. From there, you can pretty much arrange a shuttle service through your resort ahead of time, or you can just grab an authorized taxi right at the airport. To get from your resort to Puerto Morelos for dinner or exploring, a taxi is really your best and easiest option. We just asked the staff at the front desk to call one for us, and it was always quick and safe.

You know, a little planning goes a long way. Knowing a few tips before you go can just make your trip that much smoother and more enjoyable. It’s basically about being prepared so you can just relax once you’re there.

Basically, when it comes to money, almost every major establishment like resorts and formal restaurants will take credit cards. Still, you should definitely carry some Mexican pesos with you. It is just really useful for tipping your drivers and servers, and for buying souvenirs or snacks from smaller vendors in town. As for what to pack, it’s pretty much all about light and breezy clothes, a swimsuit or two, and a good sun hat. But honestly, I always suggest bringing a light sweater or a thin jacket for the evenings. You know, it can sometimes get a little cool with the sea breeze, and the air conditioning in some restaurants can be pretty strong. Finally, you should really make an effort to pack reef-safe sunscreen. The coral reef is so special, and using the right sunscreen is just a small thing we can all do to help protect it.
