Monterosso al Mare, that largest of the Cinque Terre villages, makes a wonderful base for seeing all the other treasures of the region. 1. Exploring the Other Cinque Terre Villages

Yeah so, that’s right, a visit to the other four Cinque Terre villages has to be high on your list. Each village boasts its very unique character and charm. That picturesque Vernazza, is known for its colorful harbor and captivating clifftop views. Yeah so, too it’s almost, that’s right, Corniglia sits high atop a bluff, and, as a matter of fact, it offers panoramic vistas and a more tranquil experience. Actually, Manarola has vineyards that cascade down to a scenic harbor. Riomaggiore, that easternmost village, boasts very steep, pastel-colored houses. Oh right, each place, as I was saying, provides distinct photo opportunities and chances to savor authentic Ligurian cuisine. Getting to each town from Monterosso could be achieved by train, which is a quick and convenient option, or you can go by the scenic hiking trails. Still, remember that the famous Sentiero Azzurro trail might be closed in certain areas due to weather conditions, so, clearly, you may want to check that the trail’s current status first. Yeah so, just a bit to the south of Cinque Terre you’ll find Portovenere. Oh, for instance, this charming coastal town sometimes gets called the “sixth village” even though it’s really not actually part of Cinque Terre proper. Either way, with its historic architecture, that gorgeous harbor, as well as the Doria Castle, it’s clearly worth a day trip. Getting here from Monterosso can be arranged by taking a train to La Spezia, followed by a bus or ferry ride to Portovenere. Oh right, once there, I want to say explore that narrow, colorful streets, visiting the Church of San Pietro, and go for a leisurely walk along the waterfront promenade. It’s almost like, Portovenere boasts less of those big crowds than Cinque Terre sometimes does, giving it an air of peace that’s very attractive to some tourists. You know, as a matter of fact, Portovenere, along with the islands of Palmaria, Tino, and Tinetto, has, actually, gained recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Oh right, you could potentially allocate half a day for just roaming all around Portovenere itself, so that gives you enough time to also take a boat trip around the three islands nearby: Palmaria, Tino, and Tinetto. 3. Genoa: A City of Art and History

Actually, if you take just a train ride up north from Monterosso, Genoa comes up to you, and that’s Liguria’s regional capital, that is full of history, culture, and delicious foods. Too it’s almost, that’s right, Genoa’s very own intricate network of narrow alleyways that they sometimes call “caruggi,” has UNESCO World Heritage status, providing some pretty fascinating exploring experiences. Also, definitely don’t miss spots like the Piazza De Ferrari, that’s Genoa’s primary square, and the Palazzo Ducale, that once upon a time, would have been the Doge’s palace. Yeah so, too it’s almost, that’s right, art lovers could absolutely visit the Galleria Nazionale di Palazzo Spinola, that showcases some beautiful Ligurian artwork, while foodies could wander via the Mercato Orientale to sample lots of local specialties. Taking a walk along the Porto Antico, which is that revamped Old Harbor region, basically provides awesome waterfront views and lots of recreational activities. Also, for an incredible panorama, take that very cool funicular up to Spianata Castelletto.

Alright, you could almost take a morning to just go and explore the historic center, I mean just basically meander through the caruggi. And so, that you won’t miss anything, then you might consider going to that Aquarium of Genoa after you are done, as I was saying, you might know this is the largest aquarium in Italy, before just tasting that fresh seafood at the Porto Antico. To be honest, I do recommend trying some of that authentic Genoese pesto. Oh right, I guess they invented it right there. Also, it is said that Boccadasse, a fishing village that is tucked close to Genoa’s city center, is totally worthy of a short visit to basically experience its beauty.

4. Lerici: A Coastal Paradise

Lerici, it would have been thought, boasts one other gem that rests not very far from Cinque Terre. Alright, this town could come up to you as providing a really picturesque harbor, an awesome castle, and a laid-back ambiance. Anyway, it also does possess links to distinguished literary figures, namely Shelley and Byron. Well, anyway, the castle at Lerici, as I was saying, is, definitely, the town’s notable attraction and could, maybe, offer breathtaking vistas of that Poets’ Gulf. You may also appreciate just walking across that beautiful waterfront, exploring that historic center’s meandering alleyways, plus also soaking up that scenic elegance of the location. Just a little heads up, just traveling to Lerici from Monterosso requires a bit of a ride, needing you to hop on a train down to La Spezia before getting yourself transferred onto a bus.

Right, you can just wander from one point to the other during that early morning just by exploring Lerici’s old quarter, so, as a matter of fact, visit that Castello di Lerici sometime after you grab lunch at a restaurant that has got that scenic view of the harbor. 5. The Versilia Coast: Beaches and More

Ok, that is a thought; when that very awesome Cinque Terre may perhaps fall a little short regarding beaches, one might maybe check out The Versilia Coast, and, basically, this area goes almost all the way up north of Tuscany, just a short skip far from Cinque Terre, providing you way more options if you appreciate wide expanses filled with perfect sandy shores and bustling beaches.
