Montagu, that little jewel nestled in the Western Cape, is like, very much more than just a pretty face with some hot springs. That small town, apparently, is like, a hotspot for both art lovers and culture buffs, providing, arguably, something unique to see with practically every turn. Very much unlike some generic tourist traps, Montagu provides an honest, immersive dive, more or less, into the local heart and soul. The attractions? Well, they showcase regional artists and very historical stories with flair.
I’ve spent many years kicking around this area, very much absorbing all Montagu has to show off. Because of that, I wanna hand out what I think are the top spots that just have that Montagu ‘something’. Hick’s Art Twine: The Gallery with the Unexpected Twist
First, we have Hick’s Art Twine, that location where art very much finds its way into a whole different realm, very much unlike a conventional art gallery. The main artist, apparently, is Liz van Graan, who more or less specializes in a really wild blend of stuff she collects. It includes stuff like fabrics, found objects, even things like twine, and she arranges these collections, very much making interesting things to see.
When I got there on that particular occasion, the vibe, well it, more or less felt almost as if I had been transported into, I don’t know, some wild artisan’s hideaway. This wasn’t like one of those spaces you are going to find downtown; it seems very comfortable and sort of makes that visitor curious to wander.
Her method is, you know, totally outside that box, which apparently is, also, her motto! Rather than painting, Liz shapes sculptures and puts artworks together that very much pop, that visitor feels that right away. The texture of burlap combined with metal work looks just amazing.
Going over there to Hick’s is more or less a totally immersive artistic experience. This is also for you folks who love different and are sort of thinking, “Paintings bore me!”. The Montagu Museum: That Capsule Displaying Time
The Montagu Museum just very much offers people some kind of reflective peek into a past. So, you might get a real sense for this area, really getting to understand the way those folks here used to carry on.
I found the way they keep stuff around interesting, those items providing what is basically some picture into what things were way back. Route 62: That Open-Air, Almost Never Ending Museum
Let’s jump on over to Route 62. It’s not strictly an art venue in itself. Rather, this winding road stretching by means of the Cape Winelands is just more or less like one ever-changing sort of open-air display. Because Route 62 does very much take that sightseer by farms and what is that dramatic landscapes plus many spots selling homemade treats plus locally crafted what-nots. That combination means any visitor could, literally, see, feel plus maybe sort of gobble down stuff really local.
I drove Route 62 several times, just about seeing just something so great that has me really glued when, honestly, passing through farms to be almost never forgotten plus all that stunning surrounding land.
