Actually, it makes for a spectacular base for exploring the lovely region surrounding Lake Geneva. So, if you’re looking to go a little bit further than the famous spa town, I have here a rundown of the top 5 day trips, that you could make, with a good number of options, ranging from charming villages to panoramic mountain views. These little trips, I think, each give you a unique slice of the region’s beauty and history, just right for making your vacation even better.

1. Yvoire: A Medieval Gem on Lake Geneva

Yvoire, basically just a short hop from Evian, has been named one of France’s most pretty villages, and for good reason. Anyway, this medieval village, actually perched on the shores of Lake Geneva, is a great sight for sore eyes with its stone buildings, flower-filled balconies, and that imposing castle. So, as you amble along the old streets, actually lined with artisan shops and cafes, you feel transported back in time. Then again, it’s easy to lose yourself in Yvoire’s charming atmosphere. As a matter of fact, you won’t see too many cars here, just adding to the tranquil feel.

Things you might find interesting to do in Yvoire:

  • Jardin des Cinq Sens (Garden of the Five Senses): This pretty, enclosed garden really has five different gardens in it, each stimulating a different sense. So, wander through the medieval-inspired grounds and very much enjoy the colors, scents, and textures.

So, as you know, Chamonix sits at the foot of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps, and is basically known as an outdoor enthusiasts paradise. As a matter of fact, with its breathtaking scenery and variety of things you can do, you can fill an entire day with adventures and making new experiences.

  • Hiking: Chamonix has routes that are great for people that are experts and routes for the beginners out there, actually catering to all levels. Just make sure to take a leisurely walk or try a tough climb, by the way.

4. Gruyères: Cheese, Castles, and Chocolate

Gruyères, basically situated in the Swiss countryside, is probably well known for its cheese, but in general it does offer a combination of culinary treats and medieval charm. By the way, this picturesque village, just because it’s on top of a hill and views, that basically invite visitors to walk around its cobbled streets and experience some of Switzerland’s best cheese and chocolate. If you didn’t know, there’s more to this town than meets the eye.

Thing you’ll be able to do and visit in Gruyères:

  • Gruyères Castle: This medieval castle basically shows off a history of eight centuries with awesome art, furnishings, and that very Swiss architecture.
  • La Maison du Gruyère: This gives a cheese experience and definitely allows you to see how Gruyère cheese is traditionally made. Plus, you do get a bit of a free tasting!
  • HR Giger Museum: As you may have guessed, this museum is for the artist that did the designs in the Alien movie. So, just because of that, experience a look into the mind of one of the greatest visionary artists ever, full of weird and wonderful designs.

In essence, Gruyères is a destination, usually known to provide for all. It’s kind of hard to not be taken away by everything on offer. The day you go may potentially involve exploring the medieval Gruyères Castle or maybe savouring fondue made from a recipe that goes back generations or more; just because of that, it just might very much be one of the most unique adventures of your life.

5. Lausanne: A City of Culture on Lake Geneva

Typically known for being home to the International Olympic Committee, but because of its mix of culture, landmarks and views, you could say that Lausanne is definitely an ideal location for a day trip. This can probably offer the visitor, probably one of those special experiences, that some can only dream about.

Potential activities you can attend in Lausanne:

  • Lausanne Cathedral: Anyway, this is considered one of the best examples of Gothic architecture, and features an interesting design with views that will keep you on your toes for hours, I mean, they really are worth the trek!
  • Olympic Museum: A visit to the Olympic Museum allows guests a peek behind the curtain as it goes into the stories behind some of the greatest achievements in Olympic history, now you can’t say fairer than that! In the same vein, there’s pretty interactive exhibits as well!
  • Sauvabelin Tower: Standing proud with a viewing platform offering a stunning vista of the surrounding landscapes, there really aren’t many reasons not to at least come and catch some memories. It has more to offer than meets the eye.

So, you know, no matter if you just wish to wonder down the cobbled streets, maybe go and try out some dishes that only this location can conjure up, or probably just wanting to soak in that beauty that the city clearly can offer, Lausanne almost seems like the jackpot when it comes to making it a day-trip from Evian-les-Bains.
