Top 5 Grand Rapids Outdoor Activities: A Local’s Guide
So, you’re looking for things to do outside in Grand Rapids? Very good, this city is definitely more than just beer and furniture, and it is filled with sweet spots for nature lovers. That is to say, I have spent pretty much my whole life exploring these trails and parks, so let me give you the lowdown on the spots that are, I guess, really worth checking out.
1. Millennium Park: Grand Rapids’ Giant Backyard
Millennium Park, now, is something else, honestly. I mean, it is one of the biggest urban parks in the United States, nearly twice the size of Central Park! That’s saying something. It has, very much, this huge swimming beach, walking trails that seem to go on forever, boat rentals… you name it. Too, I spent countless summer days here just chilling by the water, so it’s perfect, really, for families, couples, or just if you wanna wander alone with your thoughts.
In some respects, this place feels like a mini-vacation without leaving the city. The trails are, it seems, super well-maintained, making it, actually, a breeze to stroll or bike. The beach area is also nice because they have lifeguards, concession stands, and other family-friendly amenities, as a matter of fact. One thing to keep in mind, that, depending on the season, it can be, kind of, crowded, especially on weekends. Get there a bit early if you want a sweet spot. The address is, arguably, 1415 Maynard Ave SW, Walker, MI 49534. Check their website for hours and possible fees.

2. Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park: Art Meets Nature
Okay, Meijer Gardens. What is that about? It’s arguably more than just a garden; really, it’s a, well, combination of botanical gardens and world-class sculptures. You might be asking, why does this matter? Well, the blend is amazing, as a matter of fact. You can, in a way, wander through themed gardens – Japanese, Victorian, arid – then suddenly happen upon, maybe, a massive bronze sculpture. My favorite part is, like, the Japanese Garden. So very peaceful.
Typically, the place hosts events, classes, and exhibitions year-round, meaning that it is more or less always something going on, or that’s how it appears to me. And of course, don’t miss the amphitheater, which features acts of music during the summertime. That said, it’s located at 1000 East Beltline Ave NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49525, so get a grasp of the directions if you don’t want to find yourself lost like your grandpa last thanksgiving.

3. Grand River: Paddle Through the City
Of course, the Grand River that slices right through the city offers a different, nearly almost refreshing view, you know? You can get something like a kayak or paddleboard and explore at your own pace. You are going to get to see the city from a whole new angle, not to mention sneak a peak at some of the local wildlife too, actually. Look out for herons and eagles… there are plenty. By the way, I normally put in at Riverside Park and paddle downstream, typically.
If you do not have your gear, several places in town will happily rent you kayaks, but you can check someplace like the GR Paddling shop for rentals or group excursions. Otherwise, you should remember to plan your trip based on water levels. As I was saying, this has more importance when planning on any part of the river or lake near Grand Rapids.

4. Blandford Nature Center: A Natural Escape
Need some time for you to destress and find some alone time? Blandford Nature Center feels somewhat separated from Grand Rapids itself, for sure, a really pretty natural space with trails, a farm, and a wildlife rescue program. I mean, walking along these trails feels like a great journey into an enchanted world, right? Plus, they regularly run family-friendly activities and educational events, just a little FYI. In other words, a trip can make an afternoon into a great learning experience.
Located at 1715 Hillburn Ave NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504, this is usually open year-round, which is saying a lot for Michigan. Check their website for trail conditions because they will keep that updated and also let you know of special event schedules that they could be running on particular dates and seasons. Don’t be that guy that plans that outdoor get-together only for rain.

5. Provin Trails Park: Hiking and Biking Adventures
This is great if you love to take walks and enjoy the sights of the countryside with hills and woods, just, like, me, right? Located at 2900 4 Mile Rd NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49544, that offers multiple trails, ranging from something very easy to the more rugged trails where the bikers usually go, kind of. Provin Trails is very cool because you are, too, seeing a little wildlife along the way! So make sure you put this on your bucket list, now, because that has to be one of the greatest ways to spend time walking around.
The parking might be a bit tricky when the lot is almost completely full, but honestly, just circle once more to try finding a space. Very few people visit during the late or early hours, like your old gym at 5am, so that should be less busy if that makes it more appealing. The area does change depending on seasons, so this can even add another appeal for returning to it regularly, I can relate!
