A 2025 Review: My 2 Days Tour in Cat Tien National Park

Cat Tien National Park Entrance

You know, sometimes the noise from Ho Chi Minh City just gets to be a little too much, right? The motorbikes, the constant energy… well, it can really wear you down. I was feeling that, so I just needed a break, a real one. That’s when I thought about Cat Tien National Park, like, a place that felt a world away but was still pretty close. To be honest, I wasn’t sure if two days would be enough time, but I decided to go for it anyway. Basically, spending just 48 hours there completely resets your system in a way that’s hard to put into words. This is, sort of, my story of what a two-day trip there actually feels like in 2025.

Day 1: Getting There and a First Look at the Wild

Ferry to Cat Tien National Park

The ride out from the city is, as a matter of fact, a bit of an adventure in itself. You watch the tall buildings kind of shrink in the rearview mirror, and green plantations start popping up all around you. The final part of getting there involves a very quick ferry ride across the Dong Nai River, which really feels like you’re crossing a boundary into another place. I mean, on one side there’s a little town, and on the other, just a wall of green. Once you’re across, okay, you are properly in the park. We found our spot to stay, which was basically a simple wooden cabin that looked right out into the forest. It was pretty much all you needed, with a bed and a fan.

After settling in for just a little bit, we went over to the Bear and Wildlife Rescue Center nearby. It’s really sad to hear the stories of these animals, but it’s also kind of hopeful to see them cared for. Seriously, watching a sun bear just relax in a hammock is something else. Later that night, okay, we decided to do the night safari. You basically climb into the back of an open-air truck that just slowly drives down a dark dirt path. The guide uses a big spotlight, and honestly, your eyes have to adjust pretty fast. We caught glimpses of sambar deer, their eyes glowing in the beam, and a civet that sort of scampered away really quickly. You know, you hear so many sounds that you can’t possibly identify. It’s just a little bit spooky but mostly really, really amazing.

Day 2: A Deep Dive to Crocodile Lake

Bau Sau Crocodile Lake Cat Tien

Alright, so day two started super early. The main goal for the day was getting to Bau Sau, which just means Crocodile Lake. To get there, you first take a truck about 9 kilometers into the forest, and from there, it’s a 5-kilometer walk, one way. Let me tell you, that walk is no joke; it’s really humid and you’re just surrounded by massive trees and the sound of cicadas that are incredibly loud. I mean, it is a very good idea to bring lots of water. Along the way, we stopped at the Giant Tung Tree, which is just ridiculously big; you and like four other people can’t even wrap your arms around it. It makes you feel sort of tiny and you can just imagine how old it must be.

When you finally get to the clearing where the lake is, well, you’re pretty sweaty but it’s totally worth it. Bau Sau is just so peaceful and looks almost like a picture from prehistoric times. The water is incredibly still and covered in green stuff. We got into a small rowboat with a guide, who, to be honest, hardly made a sound as he paddled. And then, okay, you start to see them. Siamese crocodiles, just floating there like logs or resting on the banks. They are pretty much a little bit scary, but also absolutely beautiful. We even saw some really amazing birds. The whole feeling of being there, floating quietly among these very old animals, is definitely something you don’t forget.

What to Really Expect: Some Honest Tips

Trekking in Cat Tien National Park

So, if you’re thinking of going, there are a few things to know. The best time to visit is in the dry season, which is pretty much from December to about May, because the paths can get really muddy. When you’re thinking about what to put in your bag, okay, some good walking shoes are a must. Seriously. Also, insect repellent is your best friend. For the walk to Crocodile Lake, leech socks are, like, a lifesaver; you can buy them at the park headquarters, and you really should. You’ll want a camera, obviously, and maybe some binoculars to get a better look at the birds and any monkeys you might see.

As for food, you’re basically eating at the restaurant at the park’s main center. The food is pretty good, simple Vietnamese cooking like fried rice, morning glory, and some meat or fish dishes. It’s not fancy, but at the end of the day, it does the job after a long walk in the woods. Getting there from Ho Chi Minh City is fairly simple, you know. You can book a private car, which is easy but costs more, or just take a public bus which is way cheaper and part of the adventure, in a way. Just make sure you tell the bus driver you want to get off at the turn-off for Cat Tien, or Nam Cat Tien as it’s often called.

Is a Quick Two-Day Trip to Cat Tien a Good Idea?

At the end of the day, you have to ask if just two days is enough. Honestly, you can see a lot and really get a good feel for the place. You have to be realistic, though. You probably won’t see gibbons swinging through the trees in such a short amount of time; seeing them often requires more patience and, frankly, just a bit of luck. The real prize of a trip like this is just being in that environment. It’s about hearing the jungle at night, seeing a sky full of stars without any city lights, and feeling a little bit small next to a 400-year-old tree. I mean, it’s a mental break just as much as a physical one.

So, this kind of short trip is basically perfect for someone who loves the natural world and needs a quick, powerful escape from city life. It’s for you if you’re not afraid of getting a little sweaty and dirty. If you’re expecting a zoo where animals are just around every corner, then this might not be your kind of place. But if you value the atmosphere, the sounds, the smells, and the random, unexpected glimpses of wildlife, then Cat Tien is, like, absolutely a place you should visit. A two-day tour, you know, gives you a perfect taste of what this incredible piece of Vietnam has to offer.
