A Day Trip from Hanoi to Ninh Binh in 2025: Was It Really Worth It?

A Boat Ride Through Trang An’s Natural Wonder

Alright, so another huge part of this day is the boat excursion through the Trang An Landscape Complex. You will likely pass through several caves and stop at a couple of temples along the way where you can get out and have a quick look around.

Gliding Through Tam Coc’s Rice Fields

On the other hand, some of the day trips from Hanoi give you an option for a boat ride at Tam Coc instead of Trang An. It is a slightly different experience, but in a way, just as special and memorable. Basically, the name Tam Coc translates to ‘three caves,’ and your boat trip on the Ngo Dong River takes you right through them. The real picture here is the gentle river that just winds its way between these enormous fields of golden or green rice. The color of the rice, of course, changes with the season, so what you see can be very different depending on when you go. The journey is pretty much a slow drift, with these towering limestone formations, called karsts, on either side of you the entire time.

Unlike Trang An’s maze-like network of valleys, this trip is more of a straight, open path, so you can really soak in the gorgeous views of the farming life along the riverbanks. You know, you might even see some goats climbing around on the cliffs, which is kind of fun and adds to the rustic feel. It’s a slightly more rural, agricultural scene, you could say, and it feels very classic to Vietnam. To be honest, the local people rowing the boats here are famous for being able to row with their feet, which is a pretty unique thing to see. It’s a very relaxing and beautiful part of the day, that’s for sure.

The Food and Logistics: What a Day Trip is Really Like

So, what is the day actually like, from a practical point of view? Well, first, the ride from Hanoi is more or less about two hours long, sometimes a bit more depending on the city’s traffic, which can be a bit crazy in the morning. Most day trips that you book will include a meal for you, typically a big buffet with a lot of local Vietnamese foods to try. Frankly, it is usually pretty good, with plenty of choices for everyone, but just don’t expect a fancy, high-end restaurant meal, you know? It is food that’s meant to be quick and fill you up for the afternoon’s activities, and it generally does a good job of that. Now, for some real talk about how to prepare for your day.

You absolutely need to wear comfortable footwear for this kind of trip. The Mua Cave climb is no joke on your feet, and you will be doing a fair amount of walking at Hoa Lu as well. At the end of the day, it’s a long, very packed day that often starts early and gets you back to Hanoi in the evening. Honestly, my biggest tip is to just be ready for a very full day. It is not a super relaxing trip; it is an active one. But if you want to see the best of Ninh Binh in one go, this is a pretty amazing way to do it.
