Setting Off: What This Private Tour Is Really Like

A 4x4 vehicle driving through the Atlas Mountains in Morocco

You know, lots of people think about a trip to Morocco and picture a massive desert, which is basically true. Honestly, the idea of crossing a part of the Sahara is a huge pull, and for good reason, really. Yet, the word ‘luxury’ often gets thrown around, so it’s fair to ask what it actually means out there, you know, away from the big city hotels. This three-day private experience from Fez to Marrakech is, well, something different from a standard group tour. Right from the get-go, it’s all about you; I mean, you have your own driver and your own 4×4 vehicle. This pretty much means you can ask to stop for a photo whenever a view catches your eye, something that just doesn’t happen on a bus. Basically, you’re not on someone else’s schedule, which completely changes the feeling of the whole thing. The start of it all, leaving Fez, is a feeling in itself; it’s like the hum of the city fades behind you pretty fast. So, as you head south, the scenery starts to open up, and honestly, that’s when you feel the real trip has begun. It’s arguably the difference between simply seeing places and actually experiencing them at your own pace. You sort of get to breathe it all in a little more deeply. Frankly, that personal touch is what defines this trip more than anything else.

Day 1: From Cedar Forests to the Edge of the Sahara

The first day is, in some respects, a very surprising one for a desert tour. You really expect sand right away, but what you get first is a kind of green and cool climate. Apparently, the drive takes you straight into the Middle Atlas Mountains, and it’s quite a shift from Fez. You will likely pass through Ifrane, a town that honestly feels like it was plucked from the Swiss Alps. It’s so clean and orderly, with sloped roofs, which is just not what you typically picture for Morocco. After that, well, you find yourself in these amazing cedar forests. You absolutely must stop here, you know, to see the Barbary macaque monkeys. They are obviously used to people and will come quite close, just hanging out in the trees. It’s just a little magical moment before you continue your drive. The trip usually includes a stop for lunch in Midelt, a town that’s sort of famous for its apples and its location between the mountain ranges. To be honest, this is when the environment really begins to change. The scenery becomes a bit more rugged and dramatic as you move toward the Ziz Valley. In that case, you’ll see this massive ribbon of green palm groves cutting through the canyon, which is absolutely a sign that you’re getting closer to the desert’s edge. The views are frankly spectacular, and your driver will probably stop at a viewpoint so you can take it all in. This entire day is more or less about the gradual shift, building up the anticipation for what’s to come.

The Main Event: Your Arrival at the Merzouga Luxury Camp

Okay, so after a long day of travel, you finally get to the very edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Honestly, this part feels like something out of a film. The 4×4 can only go so far, and then, right, you switch to a more traditional form of transport: a camel. As a matter of fact, the camel trek into the dunes as the sun starts to set is the highlight for so many people. The silence out there is just totally different; it’s so deep and complete. And the colors of the sand, you know, they shift from gold to orange and then almost pink. It’s seriously one of those moments that sticks with you. Anyway, arriving at the luxury camp is quite the reveal. You’re pretty much expecting simple tents, but what you find is so much more.

“I honestly thought camping meant a sleeping bag on the floor. But then I saw my tent. It had a king-sized bed, a full-on private bathroom with a hot shower, and electricity. It was just unbelievable to have that level of comfort in the middle of all that sand.”

I mean, that sentiment is very common. The camp is designed to give you this amazing comfort without losing the feeling of being in the wild. Dinner is usually a delicious, multi-course Moroccan meal served under a sky that is just packed with stars. You’ve probably never seen a sky so clear. Afterwards, the local Berber staff often play drums around a campfire, and you can just sit back and soak in the atmosphere. To be honest, it is this combination of raw nature and serious comfort that really defines the ‘luxury’ part of this desert experience. It is pretty much perfect.

Day 2: Waking Up in the Sahara and Local Experiences

Naturally, you might think the second day can’t top the first, but it has its own special kind of charm. Of course, the day starts very early if you want it to. Waking up to see the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes is something your camp hosts will strongly recommend, and honestly, you should absolutely do it. The way the light slowly spills over the massive dunes, casting these incredibly long shadows, is just so peaceful. It’s pretty quiet and you’re just there with the immensity of it all. After a good breakfast back at the camp, the day is sort of yours to shape. That’s the beauty of a private tour, you know. You can, for instance, choose to go exploring the area by 4×4. A very popular option is to visit Khamlia, a small village right at the edge of the desert. The people here are known for their distinct Gnaoua music, which has deep spiritual roots, and you can actually listen to a live performance. It’s a very powerful and authentic cultural exchange. You might also have the chance to visit with a nomadic family, to see how they live a life that is so different from ours. At the end of the day, it’s about seeing a different side of the desert beyond just the sand. Or, frankly, you could just choose to relax. You can pretty much just sit at the camp, read a book, and enjoy the profound quiet. The choice is really yours, which makes the experience feel very personal and not at all rushed. Anyway, this day tends to be more about a deeper connection to the place and its people.

Day 3: The Road to Marrakech Through Valleys and Mountains

The ancient Ait Benhaddou kasbah in Morocco, a UNESCO World Heritage site

Finally, the last day is a big travel day, but it’s definitely not a boring one. In fact, the drive from the desert region to Marrakech is one of the most famously scenic routes in all of Morocco. After leaving your desert camp, the journey usually takes you through the Todra and Dades Gorges. These are these massive canyons with towering rock walls that are really, really impressive to see up close. Your driver will typically make a few stops so you can walk around a bit and appreciate the scale of it all. The big stop for the day, however, is almost always Ait Benhaddou. Basically, this is a fortified village, or ksar, that is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it’s quite amazing. It’s a completely ancient-looking place made of mud-brick, and you might sort of recognize it. As a matter of fact, it has been the backdrop for a ton of movies and shows, like Gladiator and Game of Thrones. You can actually walk up through the narrow alleyways to the top for a spectacular view of the surrounding area. After that, well, the last part of your trip begins: the crossing of the High Atlas Mountains. This part of the drive is via the Tizi n’Tichka pass, which is a bit of a winding mountain road, to be honest. But the views, my goodness, are absolutely breathtaking. You climb higher and higher, seeing small Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides, before you finally begin the descent towards the plains surrounding Marrakech. Anyway, it’s a very dramatic end to an incredible three days, and arriving in Marrakech feels like you’ve completed a truly grand traverse of the country.
