1. Historical Highlights: Nelson’s Dockyard & Shirley Heights

Nelson's Dockyard

You know, history buffs, it’s worth listening up, at least, if old buildings and salty tales of the sea sound up your alley. A visit to Nelson’s Dockyard is pretty much stepping back in time. Back in the day, this place was the main base for the British Royal Navy in the Caribbean, and you, like any visitor, can wander through the restored buildings, see the old naval artifacts, and, I mean, try to get a sense of what life was like back then. So, pretty awesome, huh? It’s like that feeling of traveling back in time, even just a little.

Anyway, Shirley Heights, this is pretty much where you, similar to other tourists, get those Instagram-worthy panoramic views of the Dockyard and English Harbour. On Sundays, so it’s said, there’s this big party up there with live music, that local food that people always rave about, and, well, rum punch of course. Seriously! People who go really seem to enjoy the combo of scenery and celebration. Very festive, I’d argue.

2. Beach Bliss: A Day Trip to Prickly Pear Island

Prickly Pear Island

You know, there are those days when you just really, really need to be on a perfect beach. You, like some tourists, may enjoy this. So, this is where Prickly Pear Island comes in, a little, tiny island just off the coast of Antigua. Day trips usually include a boat ride, time for snorkeling in that crystal-clear water, and, I mean, lunch on the beach. In a way, it’s a good choice. Basically, the island is pretty undeveloped, very natural, and just about ideal for a relaxing getaway.

I will say, it does tend to be fairly crowded, especially during peak season, so, arguably, go on a weekday if you can swing it. And yeah, don’t forget that sunscreen; the Caribbean sun, that stuff is no joke. A little beach bliss is often worthwhile, I would guess.

3. Sail Away: Catamaran Cruise around Antigua

Catamaran Cruise Antigua

Here’s the plan: A catamaran cruise? It’s really one of the best ways to see Antigua from a different point of view, is that the way to put it? I mean, most cruises take you along the coastline, stopping at various bays and beaches for snorkeling and swimming. Like most boat excursions, the tour boats generally provide lunch and, clearly, an open bar, so that your fun is not interrupted.

There really are a few companies that offer these trips, like your friendly catamaran cruise provider, so shop around, sort of look around, and find one that meets, more or less, your needs and budget. In short, remember your towel and a camera; you know you want photos of those unbelievable views, at least, right?

4. Eco-Adventure: Exploring the Frigate Bird Sanctuary in Barbuda

Frigate Bird Sanctuary Barbuda

You’ve probably heard there’s more to Barbuda than just beaches; like any place, there’s way more depth to it. You know, it’s true that this small island is pretty famous for having the biggest Frigate Bird Sanctuary in the Western Hemisphere. So, getting there is typically, normally a boat trip from Antigua, but arguably, bird watchers and nature lovers may find it really worth the trip.

The sanctuary, arguably, is home to thousands of these birds, and seeing them in their place where they are most comfortable, is really a memorable experience. Bring those binoculars – that helps get the most out of it, at least it would for me! In that case, you could always book a tour with a local guide who knows just where to go for the best spots for seeing these feathered fellas; anyway, that works for me.

5. Island Safari: An Off-Road Adventure

Antigua Island Safari

Like anyone who’s up for something a bit more rough and tumble, well, in that case, an island safari tour in Antigua is a good shout, pretty much. You know, these tours take you off the usual tourist path and give you an peek, arguably, into the island’s natural areas, its rainforest, remote beaches, and all the gorgeous vista points, very beautiful.

So, you’re probably wondering how? The tour guides are typically pretty knowledgeable about the area’s nature and the place’s past, like your typical tour guide is. So, basically, they will definitely point out any thing to look for, at least they always have in my experience! In short, this is arguably a super choice to see a side of Antigua that you wouldn’t normally encounter on your own. Just so you know, be sure to wear comfortable shoes, arguably you would want to as you explore! Like you want to on any adventure vacation.
