Some call it Tej, basically this Ethiopian honey wine, which many feel this area kinda perfected. So the name for this local type of stuff is Shekla. I guess you could almost call it like your mead of the area. This one of kind, special drink, it’s kinda got some history.
Usually, the ingredients list goes: honey, water, and gesho—a type of hops that’s locally sourced, naturally. Most brews are gonna be slightly sweeter than most other meads that you see overseas. Alcohol percentages can also really be very different, but it’s more common to see these served, by the way, during get togethers. It has roots that date back quite a while. I mean, you see Shekla being brewed here longer than anyone else around! It also is often that many think Shekla isn’t just booze, actually, and by the way they might also tell you it’s culturally important!
