Punalu’u Black Sand Beach: Where Turtles Bask
Oh, have you visited, like, a black sand beach yet? It might be unique to many, I guess? Punalu’u Beach; so too, almost, just south of Volcanoes National Park, and the sands, well, they glitter! Imagine relaxing on some really nice warm, jet black, sand. While the turtles glide in the surf nearby, just sort of living their best life, too, right?
What you can do: Stroll the shores to admire those really gorgeous black sands (that are formed from volcanic activity, by the way). Look for Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles (honu) basking in the sun. Please keep a respectful distance, for they are, like your, protected. Snorkeling? Swimming might be fun! Although waters tend to be somewhat on the rough side.
Tips for your visit: Bring a beach blanket, because black sand might be quite hotter than those pale alternatives. Also, so, bring reef-safe sunscreen to assist with shielding from the sun’s glare, so too, almost. Don’t touch, chase, or otherwise hassle the turtles. That would not be good at all!

Akaka Falls State Park: Rainforest Beauty Unleashed
Want, maybe, like, a taste of Hawaii’s rainforest beauty? The Akaka Falls State Park is the place! Conveniently located close to Hilo. So the short, paved, loop trail runs through a paradise of lush, that just so very tropical vegetation, in a way, and is punctuated by several waterfalls!
What you can do: So take a super quick walk along the .4 mile paved trail, in fact. This passes by Kahuna Falls, so, too, almost. Also the, like your, showstopper is Akaka Falls, of course! 442 feet and gorgeous, almost. Be sure, too, to allow time to fully appreciate the plants.
Tips for your visit: Bring mosquito repellant – this place, it’s almost, could be buggy! Surfaces might be pretty slippery – wear, too it’s almost, shoes with some traction, or similar, in some respects. The park entrance, in some respects, requires a small fee or the state park pass, really!
