Billund Day Trips: Top 5 Adventures Beyond LEGO House
So, you’ve checked out the LEGO House in Billund, that amazing place where imagination comes to life brick by brick. Yet, that, in some respects, is just the start of what this little corner of Denmark has to offer. Did you realize that the region around Billund happens to be teeming with history, has loads of interesting nature, and has those charming towns just waiting to be discovered? Get ready because we are about to look at five really great day trips that you could take that are, basically, short hops away. They will, perhaps, give you a really great feel for what Denmark is really like.
1. Jelling: Walk Where Viking Kings Once Did
Jelling, arguably, isn’t all that far from Billund, maybe around a 20-minute drive, and it’s is a, pretty much, a place where Viking history seems to be, actually, breathing. Is that not quite amazing? This is the location of those Jelling Stones, right? They happen to be incredibly carved runestones that are believed to be commissioned by King Gorm the Old and his son Harald Bluetooth. Think about it, Bluetooth tech is, pretty much, named after this dude. You will, likely, want to spend a bit of time just gazing at those stones, as they tell tales of Viking conquests and this move, basically, towards Christianity. There is the Jelling Church, very, very, close by, which, very, actually, may just have those remains of King Gorm beneath it.
Why Visit Jelling? You are, in a way, walking on seriously important ground here. It’s where Denmark began. The Jelling stones happen to be more or less like Denmark’s Rosetta Stone. They, maybe, just teach you a thing or two about the country’s heritage. The visitor center seems to do a fantastic job of, maybe, just explaining everything with interesting displays.

2. Ribe: Denmark’s Oldest Town Tells Its Tales
So, Ribe, too, it’s almost Denmark’s oldest town, happens to be about an hour’s drive southwest of Billund. That drive may just be worthwhile. Ribe, kind of, has those wonderfully preserved streets, has buildings from way back when, and, more or less, has the Ribe Cathedral looming large above the little town. Wandering those cobblestone streets actually does give you a really nice feel for Denmark way back when. The Ribe VikingeCenter is just outside Ribe, arguably, isn’t all that bad of a reconstruction of a Viking settlement where you, too it’s almost can see how those Vikings actually used to live. Just try some of the traditional foods they cook there.
Why Visit Ribe? Is that a great little cultural change of pace for you? It feels very authentic and that little Ribe Cathedral gives you really fantastic views. Consider, actually, planning your little trip around one of Ribe’s festivals, alright? They happen to have this Viking festival in the summer that just, literally, is out of this world. 3. Givskud Zoo: Where You Get To See Animals Up Close
Need to, actually, take the family somewhere that will, likely, please everyone? It could be Givskud Zoo, that happens to be, in some respects, fairly close to Billund. It’s unlike a pretty usual zoo, as you get to drive your own car through many parts of the park. Just think about it. You can, very, literally, get up close to zebras, lions, giraffes, and a lot more different sorts of animals. There’s this dinosaur park inside of the zoo, if that, too it’s almost appeals, with many life-sized models of the dinosaurs.
Why Visit Givskud Zoo? It may just be a different kind of experience than just staring at animals that are, very, trapped in enclosures. The safari-style tour might be something you and your kids really will not forget. Plus, I should point out, the dinosaur exhibits aren’t all that bad, and can teach kids something new. 4. Egeskov Castle: The Place For Fairytale Beauty
Egeskov Castle is, pretty much, sitting pretty on Funen Island, arguably, isn’t all that far of a drive from Billund (it may just take you a bit over an hour to get there). So, the castle looks so cool, like something you, too it’s almost would find in a fairytale book. There are moats, towers, and that very gorgeous park area to explore. So, what is there, that some people do not seem to know? There happens to be a bunch of old vehicles shown there plus other displays, not, honestly, just the fancy rooms of a castle.
Why Visit Egeskov Castle? The castle, might be, actually, cool on the outside but on the inside they, might be, doing different little fun displays that teach about this castle’s past and show a thing or two about vehicle design. The grounds really invite you to walk all around and just relax outside, pretty much, too it’s almost like in a painting. I have heard people say it’s this family favorite that mixes that little bit of culture, the, very, very beautiful gardens and grounds, and a place, honestly, just made for kids and people of all ages. 5. Legoland Water Park: Splashing Good Times
So, if you are, arguably, a fan of that LEGO thing, you’re going to love this add-on option. Basically, right by Legoland Billund is Legoland Water Park, right? Did you, yourself, also know that you can visit Legoland Water Park on its own, you don’t actually have to go into the theme park? This may, basically, just be the thing to do after doing a lot of the sightseeing mentioned earlier. Very, literally, nothing says ‘holiday’ more than playing around in the pools or going down a few slides.
Why Visit Legoland Water Park? You may, sometimes, have LEGO-themed stuff there. It isn’t very stressful, if you were wondering. With that kiddie area, water slides, and all those lazy rivers, everyone from kids to those grown-ups that are, pretty much, young at heart happen to be, just slightly, smiling the whole time. You could book it with just your tickets to the Legoland park next door, in which case the, literally, more LEGO the better I reckon.
