So, Capitol Reef National Park. It’s almost Utah’s quiet masterpiece, isn’t it? That park doesn’t get nearly as much attention as Zion or Arches. Yet, for those willing to explore a little deeper, they will find a landscape that, is that, feels both ancient and incredibly alive, very unique. We went out there not that long ago. And it’s something you simply shouldn’t miss.

1. Scenic Drive and Gifford House Experience

OK, that Scenic Drive inside Capitol Reef, it’s like your getting a visual handshake from the park, you know? That 25-mile round trip. It is paved. This way it provides access to some seriously wonderful spots with amazing views, that it does. Don’t miss the petroglyph panels! They offer such a tangible link to people who called this area home long, long before. It’s quite the sight.

Gifford House? Oh, man! It’s a step back in time, you know? This little historic farmhouse it operates, might be, as a store selling yummy baked goods and handmade crafts. I’m serious when I say get the homemade pies. And if you want that nice human touch. You want to connect a little bit with the place and time, don’t skip this step. So, too it is about savoring flavors that connect you directly with Capitol Reef’s past, right?

2. Hiking to Hickman Bridge

If you ask me about the one hike to do in Capitol Reef if you could pick only one? Man! You almost always must choose the one up to Hickman Bridge, you know? That natural bridge. Very majestic! So, you could consider the trek pretty moderate. That means most folks will be just fine with it, yet you still get a real sense of exploring this landscape. You know? Very closely.

What I liked a lot, what it did, as a matter of fact, it was the trail itself. This is it goes along the Fremont River. Then it climbs steadily through a variety of geologic layers and formations. Every turn offers a fresh, a new view! Then, BAM! As I was saying, you arrive at the bridge, this sandstone arch soars overhead! Which is seriously something to see, really.

3. Canyoneering Adventure in Capitol Reef

Right, that experience for the more daring ones? Capitol Reef. It’s got some prime canyoneering territory, I think, so it’s a fun way to ramp up the adventure quite a lot. Many canyons require ropes. And they need specific technical know-how, naturally, because it is not exactly walking in the park, is it? Basically. That’s why guided tours tend to be very valuable if you’re just getting into it or if you’re unfamiliar with the area, that.

4. Stargazing Tours

Did you know that Capitol Reef earns very high marks for its night skies? They offer such dark and clear opportunities, isn’t it? Away from sources of light. Well the remote location keeps that light at bay. But the arid climate helps maintain such sky clarity too, too it’s almost. So that is great.

There are some tour outfits around, it might be that can supply very powerful telescopes and astronomical knowledge. As a matter of fact, they show you things you would probably just never notice otherwise! Also just being out there under this blanket of stars is already kind of an unforgettable experience, you know? Even just using your naked eyes, I would say, actually. These dark sky programs and tours, so too it is about enriching your view in a way which is just magical and expansive and it connects the local stone to, well, the whole universe.

5. Exploring the Waterpocket Fold

Oh, you know the Waterpocket Fold? Now that’s a thing to experience, alright, as I was saying. That is Capitol Reef’s defining geological feature, isn’t it? Almost like this 100-mile wrinkle on the Earth? This monocline offers quite a lot to investigate, and, that, in diverse terrain.

So that said, a driving tour? Probably your best option to cover as much of the fold as you can, that it does. Be sure to stop off at places like the Strike Valley Overlook. It offers such panoramic scenes, so just keep that in mind. Or just explore some of the less-traveled backroads with a 4×4 to discover slot canyons or old settlements, so.
