Yet, one of the easiest ways to soak it all in? That has to be by taking a scenic car tour. Now, listen, you are really going to love these drives, giving you spectacular viewpoints and handy access to loads of photo ops and hiking trails. And as a matter of fact, this guide gives you the scoop on the five finest car tours in Crater Lake National Park, pointing you towards hidden gems and can’t-miss landmarks. Let’s get moving, OK?
1. Rim Drive: The Iconic Crater Lake Experience
If you only have enough time for a single drive, you know, it’s like your top pick would need to be Rim Drive. We should probably note that it’s a 33-mile route that nearly hugs the entire caldera rim, boasting about 30 overlooks that present you with completely amazing views of Crater Lake. And in some respects, you would have a different angle on the lake every single moment you stopped the car. That’s nice, right? The total driving time alone without stops is right around an hour, which should definitely figure into any of those schedules. See Prices, Availability & Reserve Now (Rim Drive Info)
Must-See Spots Along Rim Drive:
- Discovery Point: As a matter of fact, this spot marks where the first Euro-American explorers set their sights on Crater Lake back in 1853. Seems pretty important. And stuff. Naturally, the viewpoint offers classic westward-looking shots, so there will likely be people wanting to get shots around sunset, too. That said, your Instagram is very thankful to be alive for this moment, right? Read our full review: Crater Lake Rim Drive Full Review and Details
- Wizard Island Overlook: Actually, that’s another popular photo spot giving views of Wizard Island, that cinder cone rising proudly out of the lake. Plus, if you happen to be visiting when the boat tours are operational, then naturally, this is really the place where you’re able to glimpse that ferry boat making the trip out there to the island. You just might get lucky, actually.
- Cloudcap Overlook: This actually the highest point you’ll reach on Rim Drive, clocking in at around 8,000 feet! Frankly, that really does means even broader views and is a fantastic spot for watching for wildlife, also. Like deer. Actually, maybe not like deer. Whatever wildlife there might be, I think it’ll be a lot of fun, actually.
- Plaikni Falls: Really, Plaikni Falls is just a short drive off of Rim Drive, and then a breezy little two-mile hike each way that has you passing through old-growth forests to an attractive little waterfall. Sort of seems worth the time to make a quick detour. I think that if you did it, I bet you’d be grateful that you did, honestly. See Prices, Availability & Reserve Now (Plaikni Falls Details)
2. Pinnacles Road: Volcanic Spires and Painted Hills
In that case, Pinnacles Road almost presents you with a neat look at the park’s geologic history. And you know, it’s not just about the lake views alone (so pretty, right?), which is actually cool in its own way. As a matter of fact, it’s a super quick six-mile jaunt branching off of Rim Drive, and leads to the Pinnacles Overlook. I guess there could be another option for exploring that could make things interesting, but who knows, I guess we will see? Read our full review: Crater Lake Pinnacles Road Full Review and Details
What to See and Do:
- The Pinnacles Overlook: Obviously, this gives views of these completely unique volcanic spires formed after the eruption that created Crater Lake, yet also resulting in gas vents depositing ash that ultimately eroded over thousands of years. Naturally, if I am already there, I would think this overlook would be well worth checking out, or something, I think. See Prices, Availability & Reserve Now (Pinnacles Road Info)
- Hiking the Godfrey Glen Trail: What if you did that though? Naturally, this almost would be like a short trail where you have canyon views that have Pinnacles formations. Frankly, you’d need to hike maybe a mile total, which you may or may not be into! As a matter of fact, bring plenty of water?
3. Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway: A Longer Excursion
Arguably, the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway would be like, for when you have, just a little bit, you know, more time and really want to check out all that the area around Crater Lake really has to give you. Yet, so this goes all of the way from Oregon into California, showcasing many of the highlights from the Cascade Range. Is that great? Almost definitely! Driving the whole byway takes, perhaps, the whole day. This road also accesses a large area, allowing exploration and discovery. Is this what you imagined, or did you expect that it would be completely different? Because honestly, I don’t even know, that’s like…really hard to tell, yeah. See Prices, Availability & Reserve Now (Volcanic Legacy Byway Info)
Highlights on the Oregon Portion:
- Crater Lake National Park: In this situation, you would not be just driving by, or even through, it but seriously getting to see the lake. Now I’m thinking of doing this at some point too, probably with you. Actually, what if we didn’t? As a matter of fact, I think that that would maybe upset me a bit! But who’s to say what’s really going to happen? We don’t, but, obviously, just so you know that if we do do it with someone else I might just be just, oh my gosh! You hear? Just so you do ok! - Mount McLoughlin: Oh, so there are a bunch of opportunities to almost catch that imposing peak south of Crater Lake. So, a pretty drive?
4. Highway 62: The Southern Approach
Yet, in many respects, if you end up driving from the south, Highway 62, that is actually the primary access road into Crater Lake National Park. By the way, it gives you great scenery along the Rogue River and also the forest areas surrounding the park, just as an aside. So you will drive right next to that cool Rogue River, that some would like you to check out and go like swimming in or maybe like go kayaking in. But of course that has absolutely nothing to do with me personally! No pressure, it just could be you, and you also just happen to think so yourself, you just love to swim in any river and also swim into this particular Rogue River? You see! That would definitely be the right moment, right? As a matter of fact, some parts may be somewhat curvy. Also there can be some elevation change too! You just be advised so you kind of prepared and that sort of way, so you should plan your travel safely in a appropriate way.
Points of Interest Along Highway 62:

Also this highway almost feels great if also it’s for you with that liking and passion for waterways also or to kind see many things thats about wild area. Anyway this kind gives way and sort of way to an other environment, and its the opposite direction near from somewhere but thats usually almost okay in different moments to maybe think in ways right? Right at other type of locations in your living situation here for maybe quite along length and time?

If there would even almost quite the option to not jump right inside that type of thing when would maybe there even be a moment or circumstance for to do something instead. So so something not. I almost also that’s its okay for with how how kind we choose in our living right? Even in a world maybe that will only will. Not make or make, something like so it’s sort to quite the same what’s actually right, inside the living. Okay maybe something what that should have happen instead. Maybe nothing actually. The only or even.
