If you’re kicking off your cultural adventure, it’s almost a no-brainer to swing by Port Lucaya Marketplace, that is. That place is clearly a melting pot of all things local and creative, or so it seems. The market is positively bursting with handmade crafts, those little paintings with the crazy bright colors, and jewelry that probably tells a story. You, like your new best friends, will see artisans showing off their stuff, like really putting their heart into their work, very much so. Maybe take the opportunity to chat with them, like just shoot the breeze, and that could be the chance to see how Grand Bahama has kind of influenced their artwork. As a matter of fact, that’s where I picked up a cool, hand-carved wooden sea turtle, and let me tell you, it definitely reminds me of the chilled vibes there, and just walking along the beach.
What makes Port Lucaya actually stand out? Well, aside from snagging awesome souvenirs, you are also helping out local artists to make a living. And while you’re browsing, it might be possible to enjoy some live music too it’s almost like there’s always a band jamming, which just adds a ton to the festive vibe there, that is, alright? Basically, try grabbing a refreshing Bahamian drink, maybe Kalik beer if you’re feeling brave, or something more touristy such as a Goombay Smash to sip as you wander the stalls.
