Hanga Roa: Top Outdoor Adventures You Won’t Forget

Hanga Roa landscape

Planning a trip to Easter Island? Well, of course, you’re thinking about those magnificent moai statues, but Hanga Roa, which is the main town, and frankly, pretty much the only town on the island, that has a whole lot more to offer. That’s where, very, pretty, most visitors end up basing themselves, and as such, so you get a real feel for island life. From surfing its wild waves to biking through ancient volcanic landscapes, or possibly, just possibly soaking up the culture, it’s, very, super something you have to experience for yourself.

Surfing the South Pacific Waves

Hanga Roa Surfing

Alright, so first up we have surfing, very likely one of the most exhilarating things you can do in Hanga Roa. That’s because, basically, the South Pacific waves here can get intense, just almost making it a surfer’s playground. The most well-known spot might be Pea, where you’ll find some locals catching barrels and basically, just a fun time.

That spot is a bit for more experienced surfers. You can go further along the coastline, just a little towards a beach named Playa Anakena for lessons and gentler waves, should you wish to try. Plus, the backdrop is unreal, right with volcanic cliffs and maybe, almost moai watching you from the shore. A little story I recall that I found hilarious! – Once, a tour group accidentally photo-bombed some pros attempting to make history. Turns out everyone wants their selfie. What a hoot.

Exploring Ancient Sites by Bike

Hanga Roa Biking

Another fantastic way to experience the rugged beauty is biking. It’s almost just the ticket, you know? Instead of big tour buses, that would rather isolate the experience of wonder that Easter Island gifts those seeking exploration, this, more or less lets you set your tempo.

Rent a bike and so you can head out to places such as Ahu Tahai where moai statues overlook the ocean in a rather melancholy way. Then head down towards Rano Kau, which is one of those extinct volcanic craters that is quite mesmerizing. You might be huffing a bit, alright, and puffing a bit on those hills. Just a little tip from me? Bring plenty of water and that’s that for being sensible.

Hiking to the Top of Terevaka

Hanga Roa Hiking Terevaka

So, alright, if you are up for a good walk, and you are that the type of person that’s interested in panoramic views, consider Terevaka. This is basically the island’s highest point, and so, you’re getting 360-degree views that you almost won’t believe are real, you know?

That’s where you can really see just how isolated Easter Island very likely really is. You can hike up here; the trail may be rough. You’ll have fields with wild horses along your route. If that sounds magical for a day out. It might be something to bring. The correct walking gear. Just so you make things easier, but I would have worn something practical rather than dress like you are going to go climb Mount Everest. But each to their own. Be sure to have everything in hand beforehand!

Snorkeling or Diving in Crystal-Clear Waters

Hanga Roa Snorkeling Diving

Who wouldn’t fancy swimming and diving. So for something completely different, put on a snorkel or some scuba gear, because in a way, the waters off Hanga Roa. They can be like gin. Basically so clear you can’t even begin to imagine!

A bit unlike other islands with reefs teaming with varied sealife? The ocean might be so mesmerizing because the island is relatively isolated. One thing you can hope to experience is unique volcanic rock formations below water as the island boasts more that history above the tides. So what is more intriguing than a dip into history. Don’t skip the essentials. Make sure to hydrate with a water or something similar after your dive to get you ready for the next experience.

Picture this. So you’re galloping past fields, basically with the wind in your hair. With moai statues just, in a way, off in the distance and the pounding of waves against the cliff side, just, arguably creating a feeling, very just unreal! It may also get rather gusty. Bring a secure form of eyewear for those windy times as no one would like a gritty day out. Keep yourself and others safe when dealing with any types of animals or travel of this sort.
