You had everything from fresh seafood, which is obviously a must in Halong, to lots of different Vietnamese dishes and international options, so even picky eaters would be happy. I mean, the spring rolls were just incredibly good, and I think I ate about a dozen of them.

Well, you don’t go to Halong Bay just to stay on a boat, no matter how nice it is. The itinerary on the Hera Grand was, frankly, packed with cool activities without ever feeling rushed. One of the main stops was Sung Sot Cave, or the “Surprise Cave.” And seriously, it lives up to its name. From the outside, you have no idea that this massive, cathedral-like cavern is hidden inside the rock. Walking through its chambers is just a little bit mind-blowing. Our guide was really great, pointing out different rock formations and telling us stories, which made it all the more interesting. It’s a bit of a climb up the stairs to the entrance, but the view from the top is absolutely incredible.

After the cave, we had the choice of either hiking up Titop Island for a panoramic view of the bay or going kayaking in a quieter lagoon. I chose kayaking, and it was pretty much the best decision. Paddling a kayak right up close to those massive limestone pillars gives you a totally different perspective on their scale. There was an early morning Tai Chi session on the deck as the sun came up, which was a beautiful and very serene way to start the day. I mean, even if you are not great at Tai Chi, just being up there in the fresh morning air is something special.

What I really liked was the way the staff helped create a sense of community. They were always smiling, always ready to help or just have a little chat. You sort of got to know some of the other passengers during meals or activities, but there was also plenty of space to find a quiet corner for yourself if you wanted to. The boat is big enough that it never feels crowded. It strikes a really nice balance, you know? It’s sociable when you want it to be and private when you need some quiet time.
