Hoi An Countrylife Tour Review: What It’s Like for 2025
Stepping Away From the Lanterns
Okay, so you are spending time in Hoi An, right? You have pretty much seen all the beautiful yellow walls and walked the lantern-lit streets a few times over. At the end of the day, you start to wonder what is just outside the old town’s very pretty-but-busy center. Well, we had that exact same feeling and, frankly, decided to book this Countrylife tour to see a different part of the area. The idea of getting out into the green spaces was honestly just what we were looking for. It promised a view of rice fields, a trip in a type of round boat, and some food making, which, you know, all sounded like a really good day out. We just wanted something a bit more hands-on and, sort of, real.
The Gentle Pace of the Rice Paddies
The day actually starts with a short cycle ride, which is a bit different. As a matter of fact, you do not need to be a pro cyclist or anything like that to handle it. The pace is really slow and easy, and the path is just completely flat. Honestly, the view that you get is what it’s all about. You pedal past these huge green rice fields that seem to go on forever, and you can, you know, actually see farmers out there working with their water buffalo. The air feels so much fresher out there, it’s pretty much a complete change from the town. You could say it is a very peaceful way to begin the morning. Our guide, by the way, stopped a few times to point out different plants and stuff and explain just a little about rice cultivation. It was quite interesting, really.
Gliding in a Round Coconut Boat
So, after the bike ride, we went to a spot with all these coconut palm trees growing by the water. And there, you see these things that look like big baskets floating; they are actually boats. Well, getting into one of these round ‘basket boats’ is a seriously funny time. It sort of bobs around in a way a normal boat just doesn’t. One of the local people paddles you through the quiet waterways, which are really beautiful and kind of shady from the palms. Some of the boat paddlers, as a matter of fact, will spin the boat around really fast for fun if you are up for it. It is actually a bit of a laugh. We even got to try casting a fishing net, which is apparently much harder than it looks. You more or less get a real sense of a traditional way of life on the water.
A Fun and Messy Cooking Class
The cooking part of the day was really hands-on, which was what we had hoped for. So, we went to an open-air kitchen spot where they had all these cooking stations set up for us. You are given an apron and then the chef, who was really friendly, shows you how to make a few classic Vietnamese dishes. We started with fresh spring rolls, which, you know, involved a lot of chopping and rolling. I mean, my rolls were kind of messy, but it was just good fun. Then we learned to make banh xeo, those savory Vietnamese pancakes. You get to pour the batter into the hot pan yourself, and it makes this amazing sizzling sound. You literally get to feel like a proper chef for a little bit.
They pretty much give you all the fresh herbs and things right there, and the person showing you what to do makes everything seem, you know, quite easy. It’s a very satisfying feeling to cook your own meal from scratch.
Tasting the Flavors: The Vietnamese Set Menu
Alright, finally sitting down to eat was honestly the best part. The set menu is made up of the things you just cooked, and also some other dishes that the kitchen prepares for you. So, you definitely get to taste the spring rolls and pancakes you just made, and frankly, they feel a little extra special since you made them. They also served some incredible grilled fish in a banana leaf and a beautiful papaya salad that was just so fresh. The spread of food was seriously impressive, and everything tasted absolutely great. You sit at these long tables, so you get to chat with the other people on the tour, which is a very nice way to finish the whole experience. Honestly, it’s a ton of food, so you should definitely come with an empty stomach.
