Ilha Grande’s Finest Flavors: Top 5 Food & Drink Spots You Gotta Try
So, picture this: you’ve arrived at Ilha Grande, this island paradise off the coast of Brazil. The sun’s kissing your skin, and the salty air has really got your appetite going. You’re probably wondering, where do the locals actually go? Where can you get the real taste of Ilha Grande? No need to worry, I’ve got you. Over time, I’ve discovered five spots that totally capture the spirit of the island. It’s almost as if these places are a window into the island’s heart and, you know, its stomach.
1. Lua e Mar: Seafood That’ll Make You Sing
First off, we really have to talk about Lua e Mar. It’s just a little seafood shack, but, trust me, it packs quite the punch. Is that its location? It sits right on Abraão beach. Is it a fancy spot? Nope, just tables in the sand, and the waves are making a fuss, which, to be honest, is absolutely part of its charm. The main event? Grilled fish, so fresh, it’s almost as if it jumped straight from the ocean onto your plate. It usually comes seasoned with simple herbs and a splash of lime, that kind of really lets the fish’s flavor do the talking.
As a matter of fact, one evening I watched the sunset from there with a grilled snapper and an ice-cold caipirinha. Could it be any more magical? Arguably not. Oh, and about the caipirinhas – they really don’t skimp on the cachaça, so you’re getting quite the authentic Brazilian experience. The service can be slightly laid-back, yet who’s actually in a rush on Ilha Grande? Embrace the island time, that is what I say. 2. Las Sorrentinas: Argentinian Grills in Brazil? Yes, Please!
Right, so hear me out. An Argentinian grill on a Brazilian island could be a little unusual, might be odd even. However, Las Sorrentinas totally nails it. It is run by some Argentinian folks, which, basically, assures you’re in for some quality meat. The parrillada, this mixed grill platter, is a total must-try, it has juicy steaks, chorizo, and morcilla. Every single thing is cooked over an open flame. You’re able to really taste that smoky flavor in every single bite. What should you add? Their chimichurri sauce, oh my gosh, it is to die for. Its herbal, tangy, and just completely wakes up all those meaty flavors.
In fact, the atmosphere feels pretty rustic and cozy, maybe that’s because of the wooden furniture and the string lights, that give off this really warm glow. It’s often packed, typically with both tourists and locals. The word is definitely out, it’s often really busy, so maybe think about showing up early, or make a booking, that could save you some waiting. But, is it worth the wait? Absolutely, it is. 3. Café do Mar: Breakfast with a View
Now, for breakfast—or brunch, or whenever you happen to wake up—Café do Mar could just be where it’s at. That’s partly due to, where it is set. Right on Abraão beach, giving you a view that is spectacular, while you enjoy your meal. Seriously, you can really watch the boats bobbing in the bay while the sun just glistens on the water. Is there anything better? Might be the acai bowls they serve; they really hit the spot. You’re talking layers, you’re talking granola, banana, berries, all of it topped with honey, what could be better?
The coffee is just great too, pretty strong and freshly brewed. Exactly as it should be. Arguably, they offer some lighter fare, maybe some sandwiches and pastries. Those would do nicely for a little afternoon snack. But I always head for those acai bowls. You should too. Oh, and just a tip, maybe grab a spot closer to the front to completely soak up that amazing view. See Prices, Availability & Reserve Now (Cafe do Mar Full Review and Details)
4. Don Pepe: Pizza Perfection on a Paradise Island
So, yeah, I know pizza may seem strange for a must-try in Brazil, yet Don Pepe is completely doing its thing, Don Pepe has become some sort of institution on Ilha Grande. The wood-fired pizzas, oh they are a thin crust. It really is just perfectly crispy. Toppings, you wonder? Anything, ranging from the classic margherita, could that ever be a bad thing? All the way to more inventive options like the tropical, it could have pineapple and ham. You might love it; it could be an option.
The atmosphere feels pretty casual and upbeat, tends to have families and groups of friends meeting up. It almost feels like the kind of area where everyone really seems to know each other. Actually, the service has always been seriously quick and friendly when I go. Perfect if you’re quite worn out and need some good food pretty darn fast after a long day of hiking or swimming. They also do offer takeaway, maybe that’s perfect if you want to grab a pizza, head back to your pousada and totally chill. See Prices, Availability & Reserve Now (Don Pepe Full Review and Details)
5. Rei da Batida: Beachside Batidas and Good Vibes
And for a proper beachside batida? Arguably Rei da Batida, just really does take the crown. Is that because the bar really sits right on the sand at Praia do Abraão. And basically specializes in batidas? That are these Brazilian cocktails, which are really just like smoothies but they are definitely boozy. Think tropical fruits are getting blended with cachaça, it could be vodka or rum, and then maybe a bit of condensed milk for some added sweetness. Oh yeah, they’re good.
The flavors there feel super vibrant and they seem to have everything, everything from passion fruit to coconut, they’ll pretty much whip up whatever you request. The perfect kind of spot just to kick back, that’s something, while you people-watch, bask in that sun, and sip on a chilly, fruity drink. Very often you’ll find musicians strumming guitars. Who play chilled-out tunes which creates an even more laid-back atmosphere. Is it a little touristy? Possibly. Regardless, a batida here is really, an essential Ilha Grande experience, I do find.
