1. Brown County State Park: Nature’s Playground
If you’re after breathtaking scenery, then Brown County State Park is, in a way, where you want to head. It tends to be known as the “Little Smokies” of Indiana, and it certainly lives up to the name. The park seemingly stretches over almost 16,000 acres of rolling hills, dense forests, and super pretty vistas. I’d say hiking is super popular here, with trails for all skill levels, from gentle strolls to pretty strenuous climbs.
Oh, by the way, if you are like your outdoor activities, there’s, of course, more to do than just walk. You know, there’s fishing, horseback riding, and even mountain biking trails available. So, the fall is an absolutely magnificent time to visit when the leaves are basically putting on a stunning display of reds, oranges, and yellows. In some respects, it’s like stepping into a painting.
Beyond the outdoorsy stuff, the nearby town of Nashville is almost worth exploring. This place is just a short drive away and has that little artsy town vibe. There are a bunch of quirky shops, art galleries, and places to grab a bite. So, if you need souvenirs or want to sit and have lunch, this little town will provide what you seek. 2. Indiana Dunes National Park: Beach Day in the Midwest
Beach day in Indiana? That could be possible. The Indiana Dunes National Park might just surprise you. With over 15 miles of sandy shoreline along Lake Michigan, the park arguably offers a unique beach experience in the Midwest. Is that wild?
Spending time playing in the sand and splashing in the lake water seems to be popular here, plus the area has hiking trails that go through the dunes. That is that the landscape here varies quite a bit, with towering sand dunes, wetlands, prairies, and forests. I find the most challenging hike up Mount Baldy almost rewarding because, in a way, you do get a super view of the lake.
For something other than outdoorsy things to do, you could almost consider the park’s nature center, which tends to offer some displays and educational programs to inform people. This is why the Indiana Dunes National Park has a variety of something for basically everyone. In my experience, this is why some call it a hidden treasure for the Indiana residents and visitors.
