We’re talking monasteries clinging to hillsides, villages with stories etched into their very stones, and landscapes that, in some respects, seem like they’ve come straight out of a dream. Getting away for short travels from Lamay is the perfect way of discovering more about the cultural and scenic places.

1. The Timeless Allure of Lamayuru Monastery

First on the list, as a matter of fact, has to be the Lamayuru Monastery itself, so pretty well-known for being one of the oldest and arguably one of the most spectacularly located monasteries in Ladakh, as I was saying. Also referred to as the ‘Moonland’ because of its lunar-like landscape, yet the views are almost otherworldly, you know? You really can lose hours wandering its prayer halls, admiring the murals, and simply soaking in the peace. What’s seriously captivating is to learn all about the rich history; it’s apparently believed to have been a sacred site for the indigenous Bon religion even before Buddhism arrived! In that case, it shows just how important this location has constantly been. Try catching a morning prayer session if you can, yet it’s quite an experience to remember.

2. Alchi Monastery: An Artistic Treasure

Next up, in that case, we head to Alchi Monastery, which, in a way, is totally different from other monasteries in Ladakh, I mean, it’s settled in the valley floor rather than perched on a hill, so it’s a bit more accessible. What really sets Alchi aside is, that the artwork here, dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries, is just stunning, I am telling you. In some respects it is influenced by both Kashmiri and Tibetan styles, in fact. The murals and wood carvings are actually really detailed and have thankfully been very well looked after. You’re honestly going to love the intricate depictions of Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and scenes from daily life; in other words, they tell stories of olden times!

Also make time for: the Sumtsek complex, arguably Alchi’s crown jewel with its three-story-high statues and detailed paintings, is almost breathtaking.

3. Likir Monastery: Guardians and Grandeur

Right, Likir Monastery is our third stop, very easy to combine with Alchi since they are not too far away from each other. Arguably one of the standout features is, that is, its huge 75-foot-tall statue of Maitreya Buddha, still hard to miss when you’re nearing the monastery, honestly. Likir Monastery is part of the Gelugpa sect, which is more often than not marked by its serene environment and views of the valley, you know? Spending some time looking around is really worthwhile so you can experience a genuine look into Buddhist monastic life, honestly quite nice.

Really you shouldn’t miss: the monastery’s museum housing a compilation of artifacts and relics and don’t skip out on the panoramic views – seriously gorgeous!

4. Basgo: History Carved in Stone

Ok, Basgo might be in ruins these days, yet it’s very much rich with history and honestly gives you an impressive sense of the past, doesn’t it? So Basgo, in fact, was once an important fort and political center, still holding tales of battles and royal residencies. The murals within the two surviving temples are, at the end of the day, incredibly valuable and show a bit of Ladakh’s past; as a matter of fact, the landscape is extremely unique and provides an impressive experience.

You want to be certain to check out: the Maitreya and Serzang temples containing stunning murals, so try walking around the ruins of the old fort and absorbing that unique atmosphere!

5. Uleytokpo: A Tranquil Escape

Last but definitely not least is Uleytokpo, more or less known as an awesome spot for those wanting peace away from town buzz, as I was saying. That is a charming village providing great camping and views, almost making it the best option for unwinding and admiring nature’s creations, really. Even the night sky view is quite magnificent, honestly.

For anyone traveling in Uleytokpo do: camping for a night for unparalleled star-spotting, quite romantic, and taking a leisurely walk through the town and maybe connecting to the local vibe, so important.
