Lan Ha Bay Cruise 2025 Review: 2D1N Kayak, Cave & Swim Trip

You know, choosing a cruise for Lan Ha Bay feels a little like trying to pick a favorite star from the sky; there are so many, and they all look pretty amazing from a distance. So, I had heard Lan Ha Bay was like Ha Long Bay’s more reserved, less-crowded cousin, and that was basically all I needed to hear. The idea was a simple two-day, one-night escape with, like, a solid mix of relaxing and doing stuff. What I actually found was something more or less unforgettable. This isn’t just about the towering limestone cliffs that, honestly, seem to shoot straight out of the emerald water. It’s actually about the feeling of quiet you get out there, something that’s, like, really hard to find these days. The itinerary I chose was pretty straightforward: a bit of caving, some kayaking, and a chance to swim in the bay, which, to be honest, was exactly what I was looking for.

First Impressions: The Transfer and Boarding

So, the trip started from Hanoi’s Old Quarter, and honestly, the bus ride itself was sort of an adventure. Staring out the window at the scenery shifting from city chaos to green rice paddies was actually a very calming way to begin the day. We got to the Tuan Chau Harbor, which is a bit of a bustling hub, and you know, you kind of get your first taste of the organized-but-chaotic energy of Vietnamese tourism. From there, a smaller tender boat took us out to meet our main home for the next 24 hours. And seriously, seeing the junk boat for the first time was really something special. It was this beautiful wooden boat, dark and gleaming, with these, like, traditional red sails furled up. We climbed aboard and the crew, basically, greeted us with big smiles and a very welcome glass of some sort of cold fruit juice. At the end of the day, it was a smooth process and made us feel looked after right from the start, which is always a good sign, right?

A Look at the Cabins and Onboard Atmosphere

I mean, you kind of have to manage expectations with cruise cabins, you know? Our cabin was, well, cozy and incredibly efficient with its space. It wasn’t huge by any means, but what it had was a massive window that, frankly, was the only decoration it really needed. Waking up and just, like, seeing those karst formations drifting by your window is an experience that’s honestly hard to describe. The bed was pretty comfortable, and there was a small, clean private bathroom with a hot shower, which, let’s be honest, is a bit of a luxury out here. The overall vibe on the boat was really relaxed. It wasn’t a party boat, which was something I was sort of thankful for. It was more about a group of people, just quietly soaking in the unbelievable surroundings, which was, like, totally the mood I was hoping for.

Day One Fun: Kayaking into a Secret Lagoon

After a seriously delicious lunch, it was, like, finally time for the first activity: kayaking. The crew took us to a calmer part of the bay, an area just dotted with these little uninhabited islands. Getting into the kayak, I felt a little wobbly at first, to be honest. But once you get paddling, you just, sort of, find your rhythm. And then, it’s just you, your paddle dipping into the green water, and the pretty much absolute silence around you. Well, okay, it wasn’t completely silent; you could hear the distant calls of birds and the gentle lapping of water against the limestone. We paddled through a low-hanging archway in one of the cliffs and, seriously, came out into this stunning hidden lagoon that was just completely enclosed by cliffs. It felt like we had found a secret, untouched world, and it was just, like, one of those moments that really sticks with you, you know?

Through the Dark and Bright Cave

Alright, so another main event on the first day was visiting the Dark and Bright Cave area. Instead of kayaking this time, we all hopped onto these little bamboo boats rowed by some of the locals, which was a really nice touch. The “Dark Cave” is literally a water-filled tunnel that goes right through one of the massive karsts. As our rower guided the boat inside, the temperature just, like, instantly dropped and everything became really quiet and still. It was a little spooky but also incredibly cool. You could just hear the dripping of water from the stalactites above. Then, as a matter of fact, we emerged from the darkness of the tunnel into the “Bright Cave”—which isn’t so much a cave as a completely enclosed, sun-drenched lagoon. Seriously, it’s like a natural coliseum, with cliffs soaring up on all sides. We just floated there for a while, watching monkeys clamber around on the cliffs, and it was pretty much a picture-perfect moment.

Sunset Views and Evening Squid Fishing

As the afternoon started to wind down, the boat found a quiet spot to anchor for the night, and that’s when the sky, just, began its show. You know, watching the sunset over Lan Ha Bay is something else. The sun dipped behind the jagged outlines of the karsts, and the whole sky just, like, lit up with these incredible shades of orange, pink, and purple, reflecting perfectly on the still water. It’s arguably one of the most peaceful things I’ve ever seen. Dinner was a huge spread of Vietnamese dishes, with lots of fresh seafood, and we all ate together on the top deck under the stars. After dinner, the crew brought out some simple fishing rods for squid fishing. To be honest, I had absolutely no luck and didn’t catch a thing. But still, it was pretty fun just hanging out on the deck, talking with the other travelers, and watching the little glowing squid swim around the boat’s lights. It was, like, a really nice way to finish the day.

Waking Up in Paradise and a Morning Swim

I mean, waking up in Lan Ha Bay is a genuinely unique experience. The boat was so still, and the only sound was, like, the very faint noise of nature outside. I decided to skip the optional Tai Chi class on the sundeck and, instead, just grabbed a coffee and sat by my cabin window, pretty much in awe of the view. After a light breakfast, it was time for the final activity: swimming. The boat anchored near a small, sandy beach, and we were just, like, free to jump in. The water was surprisingly warm and so clear you could see your toes. There’s just something incredibly freeing about floating on your back in that emerald water, looking up at the sky and the towering cliffs all around you. It was honestly the perfect, refreshing end to the whole trip, and at the end of the day, it was the memory of that swim that really capped off the magic of Lan Ha Bay for me.
