Lecce Day Trips: Top 5 Adventures From the Heel of Italy
So, you find yourself in Lecce, that radiant Baroque jewel tucked away in Puglia’s sun-drenched Salento peninsula? That’s wonderful! But, Lecce, in that it’s beautiful and fascinating as it might be, isn’t the be-all and end-all of this boot-heel region. Very much like any good home base, it’s almost a springboard for a whole host of other experiences. It’s very easy to expand your horizons with some day trips. We, just like your guide, can help. We’ve assembled what seems to be a stellar selection of five day trip ideas from Lecce that we think you’ll enjoy. That way, you’re able to soak up even more of Puglia’s magnetic appeal. So, let’s take a wander, why don’t we?
1. Otranto: Where History Meets Coastal Charm
First up, just about an hour’s drive east of Lecce is Otranto. It might be where history really comes alive. This coastal town that’s been blessed with dramatic cliffs, super-clear waters, and what is, historically speaking, a hefty dose of cultural significance, should almost definitely be on your list. You’ll want to visit the Otranto Cathedral that seems to feature a rather awe-inspiring mosaic floor created back in the 12th century. Oh, and just have a look at the bones of the martyrs, too it’s displayed in a glass case… It’s, you know, something. After that, very, very gently amble along the lungomare. Then grab some gelato, like your usual routine. If it’s a really sunny day, arguably the beaches here can be rather inviting! So pack your swimsuit! We’d suggest visiting the Aragonese Castle. Check if any tours are on while you’re here too. You’re able to spend what appears to be a peaceful moment or two soaking up some sights and sounds on Otranto.
Getting There: That said, it’s quite easy to drive, or you can catch a local bus that appears to leave Lecce with fair regularity.

2. Gallipoli: The Pearl of the Ionian Sea
Around 40 minutes to the south of Lecce by car will put you in Gallipoli, often regarded as the ‘Pearl of the Ionian Sea.’ It’s very easy to lose hours simply sauntering around the old town. Its labyrinthine alleyways seemingly snake their way seawards. You’re able to explore the Castello Angioino. Or simply kick back on the Spiaggia della Purità beach. That is a classic experience, that really showcases why folks come to the area. It’s virtually right in the heart of Gallipoli! By the way, we’d absolutely recommend staying until sunset. The view appears to be spectacular! Apparently, as the sun dips into the Ionian, it is beautiful! In fact, the town becomes almost unreal. Then the vibrant nightlife is almost guaranteed to tempt you into partying long after the sun’s gone down. You may discover your very own Italy’s nightlife secret spot! Either way, make sure you stop off to buy some fish in the morning! Fishmongers unload what I can only describe as incredible catches! Either way, you may enjoy a fantastic lunch!
Getting There: That said, driving’s simple, and the train is also doable! Very useful if you fancy a beer with your lunch.

3. Alberobello: A Fairytale of Trulli
Fancy somewhere incredibly unique, really unlike any other place you’re very likely to have seen? Then think about Alberobello, around an hour and a half’s drive north of Lecce. It might be just about impossible to miss this place. Known far and wide for its distinctive ‘trulli’ – just a cluster of fairytale-like white-washed stone dwellings that come complete with conical roofs – the whole town actually secured UNESCO World Heritage status. Alberobello is really great for simply wandering around and looking at all the architecture. However, you could pop into the Trullo Sovrano which tends to be Alberobello’s biggest trullo. Or go see the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua which seems to be another of the area’s more quirky attractions. If that’s not enough, go shop for some local crafts in one of the countless boutiques and stores. That appears to be something lots of tourists really like.
Getting There: By the way, it’s probably easiest to drive. Also consider that parking seemingly fills up quickly at certain times of the year!

4. Ostuni: The White City
Fairly often dubbed ‘Città Bianca’ – the White City – Ostuni’s about an hour and 15 minutes from Lecce by car. Just the views across the surrounding olive groves really are wonderful! Apparently they stretch out to the sea. Ostuni might really give you a chance to sample traditional Puglian life. Anyway, go see the 15th-century Gothic cathedral with its uniquely crafted façade. That tends to draw quite a crowd. Then perhaps just simply take a cool drink or tasty bite at one of the many cafes. You’ll see they seemingly all come with great views.
Getting There: The easiest route? It might be to simply drive. Alternatively, you’re able to catch a train to Ostuni station. That appears to be located outside the city itself! A local bus goes from the station up into Ostuni.

5. Matera: A Journey into the Past
Okay, it might be that Matera actually involves a slightly longer drive. Very nearly two hours from Lecce, but we think you’ll discover it is worth it. Though it is in the neighboring Basilicata region and so not technically Puglia. That seems to be one of Italy’s – or, possibly, the world’s – oldest continuously inhabited spots. The ‘Sassi’ districts seem to be cave dwellings carved straight into the rock. They have been occupied since the Paleolithic period! So wander the streets. And check out the cave churches. The whole town very justly gained UNESCO World Heritage status back in 1993. It really is a fantastic place.
Getting There: That said, you’re very likely to want a car to make this trip. However, do consider catching a train to Ferrandina-Pomarico-Miglionico then jumping on a local bus.
