Longreach Tours: Top 5 Sightseeing Experiences in Outback QLD
If you are planning a trip way out west, you might think that there won’t be very much to see or do, or that the Outback is pretty boring. Well, you would actually be so wrong! Longreach, QLD, is packed with remarkable stuff that gives you just a little peek into the real heart of Australia. We have compiled a listing of our absolute favorites to make choosing your sightseeing a little bit easier for you.
1. Qantas Founders Museum: Soaring Through Aviation History
First up, and a definite must, the Qantas Founders Museum, which celebrates the fabulous beginning of Australia’s iconic airline. The museum actually offers several unique tours and exhibits that cover the history of Qantas, from its humble beginnings right through to its current status. You can look at interactive displays and actual aircraft to just be thrown into the history, which is actually pretty fascinating. It’s almost impossible to see the whole museum in a day, and they also have these remarkable aircraft tours you could jump on. You can check out the insides of a Boeing 747 or a Boeing 707, so pretty special.
That way, you aren’t only reading about it, but getting a feel for what air travel was just a bit like in days gone by. What struck us the most, at the end of the day, was their sincere dedication and real determination to make air travel accessible in the Outback. It’s like seeing just how far Australia has traveled!

2. Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame: Celebrating Outback Heroes
Next is the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame, a celebration of Australia’s pastoral history and Outback heritage, which also provides a tribute to the hardy men and women who developed the country. Actually, this place offers loads of exhibits from equipment and stories to live demonstrations. You will find something for everyone to enjoy there.
The displays actually depict life in the Outback and so bring to life what life has been like for generations of stockmen, drovers, and pioneers, so they certainly offer a new perspective on outback life. What stood out to us a bit, too, was the attention to detail of the exhibits and, of course, that incredible arena show. In a way, it’s more than just a museum: it’s an outback experience and really does give you that authentic look at Australia’s heart. So, really don’t miss this.

3. Thomson River Cruise: A Sunset Spectacle
Then there’s the Thomson River Cruise – very lovely to sit back and watch the sunset. The cruise almost takes you along the peaceful waters of the Thomson River and lets you watch the sun setting over the Outback, plus the opportunity for a super relaxing experience. You can relax with a drink as the landscape slips past, painted in gorgeous shades of orange and red. That, really, is picture-postcard stuff. They typically provide on-board commentary about local wildlife and so offer stories relating to the area.
We thought, too, that it was an absolutely wonderful opportunity for some wildlife viewing, where the local birdlife can actually put on quite a show. At the end of the day, it’s more than just a cruise; it is just an absolutely amazing sensory experience that really can give you a deep connection with the Outback environment.

4. Camden Park Station Tour: Outback Life Up Close
Camden Park Station tour comes highly recommended, giving just a taste of the real-life operation of a working sheep station. So, you get a chance to meet the Walker family and almost learn firsthand about their everyday lives and exactly how they manage such a large property. In some respects, their tours tend to be very informative as they relate just how much Outback farming contributes, while touching, too, on that sustainable land management aspect.
Being guided around the station and told about its history means there is some serious perspective on just how challenging—but, actually, quite rewarding, too—it can be to live in such an isolated spot. It shows real resilience and resourcefulness from the Walker family and allows you to better appreciate how it all works out here in the remote Outback of Queensland.

5. Starlight’s Cruise Experience: Dinner and Show on the Thomson
The Starlight’s Cruise Experience is a total feast for all the senses as it combines dining with live entertainment on the Thomson River. So, you get a peaceful evening cruise where you tuck into a beautifully cooked dinner while they bring some entertaining Outback-style performances to you. As a matter of fact, it creates a super-interactive and almost convivial atmosphere where you get the chance to really feel connected, very, to Outback culture through its yarns and its music.
In addition, it brings a little bit of life to stories of pioneers and bushrangers that just helps make all the history actually so alive. We thought the crew made all the difference as they had the right sort of passion that makes all the experience super memorable. It’s almost an incredibly pleasant and relaxing way to round off a day.
