Speed Art Museum: More Than Just Paintings
Now, the Speed Art Museum, that’s pretty much on the University of Louisville campus, so too it’s Kentucky’s oldest and largest art museum, as a matter of fact. And that place is huge. You see, you’ve got stuff from ancient times right on up to what artists are doing today, as I was saying. Alright, but it is really more than just staring at art hanging on the wall. First, they are almost always doing movie screenings, workshops, and have concerts happening. Yet, they always have these pretty fascinating temporary exhibits going on that rotate around, in a way. In my experience, one time they actually featured an exhibit on fashion across the ages that definitely really blew my mind.
By the way, one really good thing: on Sundays, admission is actually free! So, that’s really a quite super deal if you are strapped for cash but want to actually treat yourself to some inspiration. Anyway, the Speed, in some respects, it’s almost just a spot you should definitely visit very early in your trip to truly grasp what Louisville’s art vibe feels kind of really like. By the way, it offers a bit of historical pieces too.

You might want to start your adventure on East Market Street, yet stroll in and just discover actually small art spaces between distilleries and cool eateries, alright? I mean, that’s kind of really what it’s all about. I’ve actually spent many an afternoon there, so wandering just a bit to check out some super unexpected installations hidden in backyards or in someone’s, like your, shop’s basement, as a matter of fact, right then? It’s pretty awesome when it works.
Clearly, this kind of wandering almost allows you to engage sort of completely and basically immerse yourself in Louisville’s creative scene. So, make definitely a stop during one of NuLu’s many festivals for an excellent look that showcases how arts and community blend together in the area. LVA sort of conducts classes, exhibitions and provides art opportunities right through Louisville community venues. As a matter of fact, what LVA displays sort of clearly showcases that support for local creators can, almost, literally have actually profound effect on community vibrancy.
