Madeira’s Levada dos Balcões PR11 Hike: A Private Tour Review

Madeira’s Levada dos Balcões PR11 Hike: A Private Tour Review

Start of Levada dos Balcões hike in Ribeiro Frio

First Steps into a Green Wonderland

You know, setting foot in Ribeiro Frio is a bit like stepping into another world entirely. Frankly, the air just feels different up here in the mountains, very crisp and full of the smell of damp earth and green things growing. As a matter of fact, we had opted for a private tour of the Levada dos Balcões, which is a fairly short walk, because we honestly wanted a more personal feel. It’s almost as if having a guide to yourself from the very start changes your perspective a little. So, instead of a big group shuffle, our guide, Marco, just gave a friendly nod and, you know, we were off. He was obviously very passionate about the Laurisilva forest, and at the end of the day, that’s what makes the experience really special.

Easy flat path of Levada dos Balcões PR11

The Path Itself: An Easy Stroll for Everyone

Actually, the most surprising thing about the PR11 path is how incredibly easy it is. You find it’s sort of a welcome change from some of the island’s more challenging hikes. This trail is, to be honest, more or less completely flat, which makes it absolutely perfect for almost everyone. Seriously, you could easily bring your kids or your older parents, and they would likely have a wonderful time. The path runs right alongside a ‘levada’, which is basically just one of Madeira’s famous irrigation channels that crisscross the island. Anyway, our guide pointed out that these channels are kind of the lifeblood of Madeira, carrying water from the wet north to the drier south, which is really quite clever.

In a way, the walk is a sensory experience that builds pretty much from the first step. You are completely surrounded by these incredible, ancient trees, so the light is all dappled and green. You know, you can constantly hear the gurgle of water in the levada next to you, a sound that is just incredibly peaceful. We were sort of amazed by the giant ferns and the moss that seemed to cover literally every surface. Having a private guide here was great, because Marco would just stop and show us things we definitely would have missed, like a tiny orchid or a strangely shaped leaf. It’s that kind of detail, you know, that really sticks with you.

Panoramic view from Balcões viewpoint in Madeira

Reaching the “Balcony of Madeira”

Well, after a really pleasant and not very long stroll, you kind of feel the forest opening up ahead. There’s this growing sense of anticipation, like something very special is just around the corner. Then, quite suddenly, you step out onto the ‘Balcões’, and honestly, the view just stops you in your tracks. Basically, it’s a sturdy viewing platform that juts out from the mountainside, giving you this absolutely incredible, uninterrupted panorama of the island’s central mountain range. At the end of the day, it’s called “the Balcony” for a very good reason.

From that spot, you are looking directly at Madeira’s highest peaks, Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo, which are often, you know, peeking through a blanket of clouds. The sheer scale of the Ribeira da Metade valley below you is just staggering, sort of making you feel very small in the best possible way. We actually spent a fair bit of time there, just taking it all in. Frankly, the air feels a little thinner, a little purer. Standing on that balcony, with that massive, green valley spread out before you, is definitely a moment you’ll want to hold on to.

Madeiran chaffinch bird eating from hand

A Personal Encounter with Madeira’s Feathered Friends

Okay, so one of the most charming parts of this whole experience is, without a doubt, the birds. The Balcões viewpoint is pretty famous for the super-friendly Madeiran chaffinches that live there. And honestly, they are completely fearless. They will literally fly right up to you, hoping for a snack. Marco, our guide, had actually brought some seeds, and within seconds, we had these delightful little birds landing on our hands, a sort of magical experience. They’re so used to people that they just treat you like part of the scenery, which is really something else.

In fact, just standing there with a tiny bird, its little feet tickling your palm, is a very simple, very pure kind of joy. It really connects you to the nature around you in a pretty direct way.

Beyond the famous chaffinches, a guide with a sharp eye can spot other species, too. We were lucky enough to see a Madeira firecrest, a tiny little thing flitting between the branches. To be honest, interacting with the wildlife this way feels much more meaningful than just looking at it from afar. Marco gave us some good advice, like letting the birds come to you and avoiding bread, which is bad for them. So, if you go, a small bag of unsalted sunflower seeds is probably a very good idea to bring along.

Private tour guide explaining Laurisilva forest in Madeira

Why a Private Tour Can Be Worth It

Now, you can obviously walk the Levada dos Balcões on your own; it’s a very straightforward and well-marked trail. Yet, choosing a private tour gave our visit a completely different texture, you know. You get to move at your own speed, which is a huge plus. We could, for example, linger at the viewpoint for as long as we liked, without any pressure to keep up with a larger group. In short, there was no rush at all.

Basically, the real value is in the guide’s knowledge. Instead of just seeing a pretty forest, we were kind of learning its story—which trees were endemic, how the levada system works, and little local tales and stuff. Frankly, it’s that personal connection and insight that transforms a simple walk into a much richer memory. So, for your prep, just wear some comfy shoes, maybe bring a light jacket as the weather can change quickly, and definitely your camera. This little hike, especially with a guide, offers a massive return for a very small amount of effort.
