As the sun started to set, we were led to the main event, you know, the desert camp. It’s almost exactly what you picture in your mind. There are Berber-style tents, low tables, and colorful cushions and carpets spread out on the ground. Lanterns and a big central fire are lit as it gets dark, creating a really cozy and sort of magical atmosphere. As a matter of fact, the setting sun over the desert landscape is absolutely stunning and you’ll want to take a lot of pictures. You just get to sit back, drink some sweet mint tea, and watch the sky change colors. In that case, it really does feel like you’ve escaped into another world, at least for a little while, you know.

Dinner is served after you have settled in, and it’s a very traditional affair. We were served a multi-course meal, basically starting with various Moroccan salads. The main course was a classic chicken tagine, which is, like, a slow-cooked stew with vegetables and spices, and it was actually quite flavorful. There was also a vegetarian tagine option, so that’s something to know. For what it is, which is, you know, a meal cooked for a large group in the middle of nowhere, the quality was pretty good. You eat family-style, sharing dishes with the others at your table, which adds to the communal and friendly feeling of the whole evening. At the end of the day, it’s a very satisfying and filling meal.

Finally, the evening’s entertainment began right after dinner. This is that dinner show part of the package, you know. A group of local musicians played traditional Berber music using drums and other instruments, which was really cool to hear. There were also dancers who performed, and the highlight for many was probably the fire eater. He did some really incredible things with fire, lighting up the dark desert night. The whole show is, in a way, designed to give you a little taste of local culture and performance. Is it the most authentic thing you’ll ever see? Arguably not, but it’s still really entertaining and a very nice way to finish the night before the drive back to Marrakech.
