Perth Day Tours: Top 5 Adventures You Can’t Miss

Perth city skyline

Looking to get away from the city for a day? Perth, Australia, is like your jumping-off point for all kinds of incredible experiences. That is, whether you’re into wildlife, vineyards, mind-blowing landscapes, or some really old spots, there’s like your perfect day trip just waiting to happen. And so, I’ve gathered the five top full-day tours that, arguably, show off the best stuff around Perth. You, actually, are going to find something you will absolutely enjoy.

1. Rottnest Island: Quokkas and Coastal Bliss

Rottnest Island ferry

Rottnest Island is super famous for, you know, its adorable quokkas and, like, gorgeous beaches, too. You, like your average tourist, can hop on a ferry from Perth (Fremantle too it’s almost as good) and you’re, kind of, on your way to this car-free paradise. Then, very soon you might be riding around on a bike, checking out all sorts of hidden bays and perfect swimming spots. It’s just a delightful trip. And still, remember to bring your camera because a quokka selfie is like your total must-do.

One standout memory I keep having is the view from the Bathurst Lighthouse. That is, the island is really stunning, especially the mix of turquoise waters and super-white sands, too. We, in my group, spent like ages up there just soaking it all in and grabbing pictures, you know? It was that kinda perfect day.

What to expect:

  • Ferry trip to Rottnest Island
  • Bike riding around the island
  • Swimming and snorkeling in crystal-clear waters
  • Quokka spotting (and selfies!)
  • Visit to the Bathurst Lighthouse

2. Swan Valley: Wine, Chocolate, and Local Produce

Swan Valley wineries

You have a taste for the finer things in life? Swan Valley is where you probably should be! That is, it’s Perth’s oldest wine region and so it offers a bunch of treats for your taste buds. Now, think about this: you spend your day winery-hopping, with chocolate tastings in-between and, actually, gourmet lunches, too! This area is a super convenient day trip if you’re staying around Perth.

I can vividly recall stopping by the Margaret River Chocolate Factory (even though it’s in the Swan Valley, just the name stays with you), too, it’s like your haven for anyone who loves chocolate. It’s very hard to pick just one kind from all those free samples, that, is very true. Then there’s the wineries themselves; small, family-run vineyards are there so too it’s, big estates all show a good time and super nice stuff.

What to expect:

  • Wine tasting at several wineries
  • Chocolate and cheese sampling
  • Gourmet lunch at a local restaurant
  • Visit to the Margaret River Chocolate Factory
  • Exploring the scenic Swan Valley region

3. The Pinnacles Desert: A Geological Wonder

Pinnacles Desert at dusk

Want something that shows, in a way, the raw power of nature? The Pinnacles Desert might just have you hooked! This day trip gets you, possibly, as close to another planet as you’re gonna get in just Western Australia. So you stroll among the thousands of limestone pillars rising from the sand and it, typically, creates this crazy, surreal scenery. This particular tour usually hits up other neat places around the region, just in case. As I was saying, expect some variety.

My memory goes way back to the time I was standing there as the sun went down, that, admittedly, makes everything even cooler! The way the light casts those tall shadows? Very dramatic! The trip often goes to the fishing town of Cervantes to sample super fresh seafood. As a matter of fact, I had some, like, pretty great fish and chips by the sea.

What to expect:

  • Visit to the Pinnacles Desert
  • Sunset viewing over the Pinnacles
  • Stop at the fishing town of Cervantes
  • Optional sandboarding
  • Wildlife spotting opportunities

4. Margaret River Region: Wine, Caves, and Coastlines

Margaret River caves

Even though it’s better known for several-day stays, it’s, apparently, doable to cram in, possibly, the best bits of the Margaret River region in just one day from Perth, though the travel time is, arguably, longer than the others on this list. We think the area offers the vineyards, cool caves and, so, the amazing coastline so that might be just the ticket for those who can stand the commute.

One, maybe not as good, but memorable cave visit made things cool in a way that it’s literally underground, you know? After all that cave exploring, that is, of course, followed up by a premium wine tasting at one of the top wineries, very cool! Then again, the scenery on the drive alone is totally worth it; just your rolling hills covered with vineyards stretching out just about endlessly.

What to expect:

  • Wine tasting at top Margaret River wineries
  • Guided cave tour
  • Scenic drive through the countryside
  • Coastal views and photo opportunities
  • Gourmet food experiences

5. Historic Fremantle: Culture and Maritime History

Fremantle Prison

Like, wanting a trip that doesn’t take you super far? Check out Fremantle; it, basically, shows you some old history mixed up with a really alive culture, as I was saying. So it is Perth’s neighbor-slash-sister city. You can go by train super easy and then find some awesome old buildings, street art and great seafood.

That is, when touring the Fremantle Prison that showed a pretty great bit of the grimmer side of Australia’s past; as a matter of fact, it was intense. Walking around those streets, after all, makes for nice contrasts, after a dark trip. You, as your average historian, should remember to visit the Fremantle Markets too, because there’s almost every type of grub there imaginable, you know?

What to expect:

  • Visit to the historic Fremantle Prison
  • Explore the Fremantle Markets
  • Walk along the harbor
  • Discover street art and local shops
  • Enjoy fresh seafood at waterfront restaurants
