Södermalm 2025 Review: Stockholm’s Hip & Bohemian Heartbeat

For an area that feels so full of creative energy, Södermalm also has these surprisingly peaceful pockets of nature. In fact, some of the very best views of Stockholm are found right here. One of the must-do things is, of course, taking a walk along Monteliusvägen. It’s a fairly short walking path along the cliffs on the northern edge of the island. To be honest, the view from there is just breathtaking. You see the whole of Riddarfjärden bay, with City Hall and Gamla Stan spread out in front of you like a perfect postcard. It’s especially amazing during sunset, when the sky just lights up with color and the whole city starts to twinkle. It’s one of those spots that’s both popular and somehow still feels a little bit personal.

If you’re looking for an even more local and relaxed spot, you could make your way to Skinnarviksberget. Now, this is the highest natural point in central Stockholm, and it’s basically just a big, rocky hill. There aren’t any cafes or official viewpoints, which is actually part of its charm. You’ll see locals gathering there with picnics and blankets, especially on warm summer evenings. We just found a spot on the sun-warmed rocks and sat there for ages. It’s sort of a perfect escape from everything, you know? It shows you that even in a capital city, you can find a little piece of quiet wilderness just a short walk away.

The most famous institution here is definitely Fotografiska, the contemporary photography museum. Honestly, even if you’re only mildly interested in photography, this place is well worth a visit. Plus, the cafe on the top floor has one of those incredible views we were talking about, which is a pretty nice bonus.
