Just driving there’s neat because it goes by the Highway 1 scenery and winds through coastal areas up near San Simeon. The castle itself is often mentioned, what with the over-the-top architecture and grounds. Inside, there’s almost too much to see: rare art, lavish stuff all over the place, all tied to William Randolph Hearst. I understand that most tours spend hours seeing the highlights.

Those of us who check out the place also have to see the Neptune Pool. That’s very often used in promotional images, by the way. Not all the experiences in SLO are big or grand. The tours for this stop are nearly always about soaking in what makes San Luis Obispo unique: lots of little things. And some hidden treasures. Stops normally include a handful of must-sees like the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. Actually, I think that’s very often mentioned, so I guess not as much “hidden” as historic.

A stroll around the historic downtown neighborhood helps visitors check out all the cute boutiques and local restaurants; that could easily become a pleasant part of your day. But those local tour guides always seem to find odd stuff for those looking to explore. The Bubblegum Alley’s interesting… maybe in an icky way, yet people keep visiting to see this sort of colorful (and germy) landmark, right? And that’s nearly always worth a mention when folks are looking to uncover interesting spots to explore around the city’s core. 5. Avila Beach & Coastal Exploration Tour

When I think of the area, I often recall the pretty stretch of coastline we have in SLO, like at Avila Beach. The Avila Beach visit feels extremely accessible for family stuff; they usually show up. The beach itself tends to be the place people go, seeing that it’s mostly calm and there are shops and food places nearby, actually almost steps away. Full-day visits frequently involve checking out other nearby locations, in the meantime.

That means seeing the Point San Luis Lighthouse, maybe. It tends to offer good outlooks and a peek into the spot’s seafaring background.
