Sarria Outdoor Adventures: Top 5 Activities

Sarria, kinda the place pilgrims pass through on their way to Santiago de Compostela, very surprisingly is more than just a stopover. Sarria, a Galician town in Spain, might be more of a base for some amazing outdoor fun, I mean really! When you get off the Camino de Santiago for a bit, is that you see Sarria’s countryside come to life, doesn’t it? It’s almost filled with cool spots just asking for a bit of exploring, anyway.

1. Hiking the Final Stage of the Camino de Santiago

Alright, so most people walking into Sarria are pilgrims making their way to Santiago, and it’s probably a hike, actually. Sarria is, in a way, a super popular starting point just because it’s over that 100 km mark needed to get your Compostela certificate, that is that official stamp of completion, right? Even though many people think about the pilgrimage itself, that’s walking into Santiago, the countryside surrounding the town is so very awesome.

Just a bit outside Sarria, the landscape turns into what some people would call rolling hills, so too the deep woods typical of inland Galicia show themselves. Instead of just following those marked trails, I mean the ones directing you to Santiago, consider veering off on some smaller paths. Arguably you could check out routes like the one toward the Monastery of La Magdalena; it is steeped with lots of medieval history and boasts the kinda architecture that sends you back to times long past. The air, as a matter of fact, smells different, the stone is super aged.

The nice thing is that some places you could pause and quietly reflect. It seems like it is so much easier to connect with nature when you aren’t in a rush. So many times pilgrims go past places as if they just wanted to get to the end, is that correct? One recommendation is that, while the main paths are pretty well-kept, just a bit outside town the trails are really going to get a little rougher. Wear appropriate shoes for a little more protection, actually, and arguably it is also prudent to bring a little bit of water and maybe a snack or two!

2. Exploring the River Sarria

There’s a little gem of a river winding its way near Sarria: It’s called the River Sarria, it really is. Okay so many just walk alongside it, there are tons of neat ways to actually enjoy it, literally.

Kayaking could be an option for a bit of an adventure. Apparently local outfitters usually offer short trips suitable for literally any experience level, from those who have literally never sat in a kayak to those with a bit more practice. You could also get up close with local nature in some respects, getting a close-up look at some plant life on its banks and some bird life above, arguably.

Anyway, maybe kayaking is not something you’re in search of, just maybe! Another fun option is to locate a cool spot along the riverbanks and have something resembling a picnic. You could spread out a blanket, hear that river trickling by, arguably? It seems like this might be the kind of afternoon everyone remembers later on. Fishing may be done in places, so anyway, you may need to get that license in order and follow whatever regulations are set out in place.

3. Discovering the Fervenza de Augacaída

Just a tad outside Sarria (roughly a 30-minute ride), is this Fervenza de Augacaída waterfall that will not disappoint at all! Its Galician name almost kind of suggests “waterfall of the fall of water”. When there has been some rain, and it falls strongly, this falls is worth the short little drive.

As you approach, as a matter of fact, you hear it way before you see it. Then there are trails around, just for different angles to get a different viewing perspective. When it’s especially hot out, its very cooling mist is welcome! While getting down requires moving across some rocks, and, in that case, it will test balance and sure-footedness; I mean, that’s pretty doable for all. Once down, there is that shallow pool perfect for taking time to simply rest. Arguably the sound that the water makes seems to carry away a day’s little stresses.

Before planning that visit anyway, make certain to check conditions and read up about its directions! Especially during off-peak times anyway, there are so many small signs, literally! So take time out and stop; I mean this is worth seeing.

4. Mountain Biking near Sarria

Okay for those bringing a bicycle and seeking adventures in the countryside? Well Sarria is more of a hub for cyclists, honestly? What you’ll see surrounding the city, anyway, are tons of routes, from very easygoing rides to climbs with way bigger challenges.

Instead of just riding on those Camino paths – just because many might not be properly fitted with bicycles – venture onto routes meant just for bikes. It seems like the terrain ranges a great deal! I mean from wide open lanes to really woody areas providing all forms of adventures!

Prior to actually doing anything in that case, I would very much find the bicycle trails that fit preferences. You’ll have those local bike stores anyway; they’re going to provide options! It’s important though, for personal safety’s sake to pack tools as well as repair kits, it really is! Don’t simply forget, you know, water; I mean it really can heat up in summer!

5. Exploring Local Festivals and Markets

Sarria may, apparently, just come alive if there happens to be festivals and market days happening. Okay while maybe it’s just a little off what’s considered traditional “outdoor” adventures, but culture gives character to locations just as the location itself can.

In fact those festivals could, in a way, reflect old local traditions, is that you find dances, parades and so too, music often are just put on display to make them fun events for everyone from locals to others just coming through! Checking around with Sarria will uncover market days if, in fact, the purpose for coming to the community is simply to sample and explore produce made close by, but don’t forget artisanal food and wares either, seriously!

Checking some community notice board postings while also reading up what online Sarria spots cover will give the times of events to those intending to fully spend the time making lasting moments with local community members!
