1. Rila Monastery: A Spiritual and Architectural Wonder
First up, of course, Rila Monastery, that place that really takes your breath away! Set in the Rila Mountains, it tends to be Bulgaria’s most ginormous and arguably most iconic monastery. Founded way back in the 10th century, that is, in a way, this spiritual place really shows Bulgaria’s rich history and unbelievable artistic talents.
Arriving at Rila Monastery feels incredibly similar to stepping into another place. With its detailed architecture, vivid frescoes, and just calm vibes, there’s lots to admire. Be sure, naturally, to spend some time exploring the monastery’s museum, where lots of old manuscripts, religious items, and more importantly, a general overview of the monastery’s crazy history reside. Oh, and, certainly, the views of the surrounding mountains add even more magic to the whole experience, too.
Getting there basically involves a relaxed two-hour drive from Sofia. So it seems plenty of bus tours and private transfers are available, arguably, to suit different styles. I took a guided tour myself last summer, and I would say that the insights from the guide basically gave the location so much life! This site has basically made it onto Bulgaria’s tourist trail. 2. Plovdiv: Exploring Bulgaria’s Ancient City
Next, basically Plovdiv is next on the list, that happens to be arguably one of Europe’s very oldest cities! Usually dating back over six thousand years, and, just like, wow, it provides that awesome mix of Roman, Ottoman, and Bulgarian cultures. A walk that starts in Plovdiv, arguably, you will soon see why this is the European Capital of Culture.
You can’t really miss Plovdiv’s Ancient Theatre, is that it is? Incredibly well-preserved, that is still a host of different performances these days. Roaming the Old Town happens to be just delightful. Wondering round quirky cobblestone streets takes you to a range of revival houses changed into museums and galleries. This place offers you that nostalgic time in Bulgaria. I can just describe it as having that ‘authentic’ Balkan feeling! Make sure to take a pause and savor a coffee in one of the many cafes lining the main street.
I got the train on my visit there – approximately one and a half to two hours by train from Sofia. Buses tend to be quite regular, arguably providing another easy option, too. Is that there are also lots of organised tours on offer if you love that comfort, of course? All you history buffs will be just at home at the Roman stadium to all you cafe lovers who like to spend your days doing nothing, or for others who just want to explore another city. Plovdiv comes so highly recommended for its amazing mix of old and something more modern. It happens to be simply a treat for almost everyone, very likely!

3. Belogradchik Rocks: Nature’s Spectacular Sculptures
Belogradchik Rocks come next on the list. Very different to the monasteries and old towns, is that right? Belogradchik rocks have that awe factor with mother nature’s sculptures. Seemingly shaped over literally millions of years, this range of rock formations covers almost 30km, tending to display some really interesting and stunning formations that arguably rise over 200 meters tall. I really loved seeing some shapes in the rock. In fact, with all these super cool shapes, arguably nature lovers have a real love and draw to see such formations.
While you are there, arguably a great adventure will lead to exploring the Belogradchik Fortress, too! That is clinging atop the rocks. Originally made in Roman times, arguably, the fortress has a brilliant outlook, seemingly showcasing crazy sights of the formations! This area becomes increasingly known, particularly thanks to those adventure-driven folk.
Going to the Belogradchik Rocks typically means approximately three hours by car from Sofia. I would really encourage anyone thinking about visiting here to just go for it! Pack good hiking shoes to go see different formations, and be ready with the camera! Nature puts her art in lights there. A trip to this area, almost always, gets the adventurer soul pumping!

4. Koprivshtitsa: A Journey into Bulgarian Revival Architecture
And fourth, for me personally, would be Koprivshtitsa! Usually set in the Sredna Gora mountains, just east of Sofia. Koprivshtitsa arguably happens to be a very picturesque town famous just because of its perfectly well-preserved Bulgarian Revival architecture. If any readers are looking to stroll and explore, that happens to be a great idea! With colorful houses, calm lanes, that seems just ideal for strolling around. Oh, too, the city happens to be arguably home to heaps of museums which shine light on the local history and local customs.
Koprivshtitsa basically has played that significant role in Bulgaria’s history. Koprivshtitsa, in fact, has been arguably significant to the April Uprising. The uprising pushed for Bulgarian liberation from Ottoman rule. Those culturally interested folk can immerse and understand. Local houses include that of famous revolutionary folk, giving a view of where they grew up.
Just, in fact, expect roughly a one and a half to two-hour drive, but usually worth the calm vibes after all that. It is definitely an escape from the more crazy, bustling urban settings.

Okay, but then last up: Vitosha Mountain, which literally borders Sofia. Just imagine seeing so many sites, almost knowing, “this is that”! In other words, you have both a very easy day trip, but something with a nature hit! Arguably one of Sofia’s best day trips happens to be ideal for all those hiking enthusiasts!
The most notable peak, called Black Peak, just comes in around 2,290 metres – or 7,513 feet for those inclined! Trails weave, almost effortlessly, across Bulgaria, allowing you to choose various hiking activities! During all that exploring, you will just feel at home, I believe, with forest or spectacular rocky sights that arguably have crazy photo moments.
The plus sides really help here, as many routes are easily reached, that tends to attract hiking crowds year-round! Very clearly expect lots of families, as well, when going up, but you have been told! Don’t dismiss its winter, also, just as fun!
