Stara Zagora Day Trips: Top 5 Unforgettable Escapes

So, if you find yourself with a bit of time in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, then you might be looking for some exciting places to visit just for the day. Maybe you have come to discover Bulgaria, anyway, Stara Zagora is just like a starting point. I want to let you know that there are surprisingly many cool spots just a drive away, just waiting to be explored, so to help you make the most of your time, I have made a list of my five favorite day trips from the town.

1. Buzludzha Monument: A Concrete UFO on a Mountaintop

The Buzludzha Monument, it’s almost like an abandoned relic of Bulgaria’s communist past. It’s located high up on a mountain peak, and that, by the way makes getting there that extra bit exciting, so the drive itself offers spectacular views. Many people find the monument’s architecture really quite remarkable. Picture this, alright; a huge, concrete structure that really looks like a flying saucer had landed. I think that, when you get close to it, you feel a little sense of awe at its decaying grandness, and also at the way nature’s starting to claim it back.

The inside, it’s almost covered in graffiti now, too it’s also damaged by time and weather. That said, if you are very keen on photography, that means the inside can still inspire some pretty amazing, like unique shots. Just be warned: the place is not officially open to the public, and it’s potentially risky to go inside, that said a peek from the outside is well worth the visit. The mountain scenery, it’s almost the star attraction itself, I tell you, offering incredible views across Bulgaria. Visiting Buzludzha it tends to be like stepping back in time, that’s a bit thought-provoking, and you are seeing one really distinctive place.

2. Shipka Pass: Where History and Scenery Meet

Not far from Buzludzha, Shipka Pass holds a seriously prominent spot in Bulgarian history. Shipka is where, in 1877, Bulgarian and Russian soldiers heroically defended the pass against the Ottoman army, it’s almost like it became a decisive moment in the Russo-Turkish War. The monument on Shipka Peak it tends to be just a symbol of the bravery of the defenders.

If you climb the many steps to the top of the Stone Tower, you get that amazing panoramic view. The surrounding Balkan Mountains, that, I tell you is perfect for photographers, and basically pretty impressive. A little further along, Shipka Monastery is not just any religious place. It stands to honor those same heroes and is made remarkable by its Russian architecture and gold domes.

Shipka it is one destination that very effectively mixes history with scenic beauty. It is ideal for those who love their landscapes, want to soak up some heritage, or just need a place that brings moments in Bulgarian history alive.

3. Kazanlak: Roses, Thracian Tombs, and Festivals

Kazanlak is located centrally in the Valley of the Roses, and that means, of course it has made itself famous for its rose oil production. It is where the annual Rose Festival bursts with colors, sounds and, more to the point scents! The festival often it tends to happen in late May or early June, a bit when the roses are at their best.

If you should be nearby, then expect parades, folk dances, and rose-picking rituals. The Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak, a UNESCO World Heritage site, holds outstanding artwork of Thracian culture. Though the original tomb is kept closed to protect the art, there’s a replica near which offers you pretty amazing, or what I mean is; closely similar insight to these old times.

The town, and so too, the history museum gives a fuller view of regional life during Thracian times and shows its development through the years. Kazanlak provides what I can only describe as quite a sensory rich trip and it’s an amazing mix of cultural celebration, history and beautiful nature. If, like your good self you find yourself wandering around that neck of the woods, then trust me, that’s an escape that’s really rewarding.

4. Starosel: Ancient Thracian Heritage

Starosel is basically like a smaller village, but very important since it has one of the biggest Thracian cult complexes. The temple it tends to be basically made up of an underground structure and the upper temple with colonnades and a central dome. These historical structures are, to some degree providing people with pretty rare clues of religious practices and how life used to be way back then for the Thracians.

The area is, anyway now a really popular destination. It’s only a short drive away from Stara Zagora, that’s a plus. This gives those interested a quick look into Bulgaria’s ancient past. While the history there gets pretty good attention, people may well want to check out Starosel Winery too. I mention this because wine tours often take place where folks get to learn about Bulgarian winemaking tradition and sample the wine of that area. A visit really works out well for those who like cultural exploration mixed with relaxing wine activities.

5. Sinite Kamani Natural Park: Nature’s Blue Rocks

Sinite Kamani Natural Park, it’s just next to Sliven and offers trails of great diversity, plus stunning scenery and loads of activities for a fun day outdoors. “Sinite Kamani,” actually means “Blue Rocks,” so called because the rocks can look kind of bluish at sunset.

For those who like it easy, a chairlift can save the tiring hike to the top. The trip will give a great look at the panoramic views. For climbers or hikers, the park has multiple trails cut into rugged rocks which come with different challenge levels for that walk to suit any desire. The park teems with wild birds, plants, even deer roam there, something of a hit among the hikers wanting peace.

I find the Karandila area of the park a good base due to its hotels, restaurants and easy routes out to different sights. People who appreciate natural places can surely get to enjoy climbing, picnics and all things that generally mean having the peace of an exciting, restorative natural experience.
