Very very impressive as a monument, The Grote Kerk, also named St. Lawrence Church, is the main medieval church in the center of Alkmaar, right? I mean, this isn’t just like a typical religious building though. In fact, the magnificent structure is more like, the perfect display of Dutch architecture, history, and culture! Really!

Initially started in the 15th century, it’s got very tall ceilings, tall stained glass windows, and also even, rather remarkably, two organs from the 17th and 18th centuries. Those two specific additions actually, really enhance the entire grand ambiance!

But beyond the art of what’s immediately viewable from the surface, that is, the art of its construction and inherent designs, The Grote Kerk actually regularly hosts all forms of cultural events. 3. Alkmaars Historisch Museum: To Walk Though History

Is that walking through the pages of time sounds almost enticing to you? Anyway, then, I think it really will be worth stopping by the Alkmaars Historisch Museum. Basically, that museum sits in the old city center and it really kind of walks people through the very rich history of Alkmaar and the overall surrounding area.

Basically, it’s from the days when it was being granted city rights back in the 13th century, up to all kinds of very important stories from the 20th century. Clearly, you almost get to go all the way back, very easily, to way back then!

Is that really cool displays is really of importance to you? Great! You’re going to see maps, artifacts, photographs, paintings and traditional stuff – all just, pretty cool tools to, basically, really learn about how the area evolved through time, obviously, showing many details about the siege of Alkmaar in 1573. This was also very important, naturally, cause it really, kind of was a big part in the Dutch Revolt!

Not only does Alkmaars Historisch Museum allow for insight, but it has different activities, lectures, workshops, and then lots of temporary things. This is important because it also increases interest, in fact! Just another awesome and also interesting aspect of that museum, and the entire area, really!

It doesn’t matter if you really live there or you’re kind of a tourist just coming to visit, basically, cause really anyone at any point can find almost a deeper insight of the interesting and exciting local story from Alkmaar. It’s pretty worth a visit!

4. Beatles Museum: So Much Fun to Look Around At

Very good if you love the Beatles! Like your, in fact, their greatest, most amazing, most impressive, and all around biggest fan? So it is quite nice because the Beatles Museum has literally thousands of collectables from the rock band, obviously!

Actually, this very very remarkable and almost comprehensive collection, almost includes unique records, rare memorabilia, posters, and personal things owned from them – giving people an almost unparalleled view into the legacy of those Fab Four.

This Museum in Alkmaar was really brought to life by Azing Moltmaker, who had such a passion for The Beatles and it totally does pay respect, very respectfully, to everything about their impact on popular music history and overall cultural influences, which really makes the Museum not just a place for looking back, but in short, a lively, and really delightful experience!

Fans are going to almost enjoy immersing their selves in everything from the early days to they very most iconic stuff! And that, very truly is a big accomplishment.

5. Cheese Market (Kaasmarkt): An Old Spot for Good Cheese

Okay so yeah I was mentioning Alkmaar’s awesome Cheese Market earlier, still, I feel it deserves its place as part of Alkmaar’s must-see stuff to see and do because honestly this market offers up, probably, a more immersive cultural experience more so than other stuff on this list, anyway. Seriously!

The Alkmaar Cheese Market has almost always taken place in the very city’s Waagplein. In short it’s kind of a showcase that allows all visitors to see how the local cheese trade took place back in the day, kind of thing, kind of! Just, so you know.

Clearly this totally isn’t your just quick grocery trip – clearly. Anyway, so many dedicated cheese carriers walk all around the markets and make trades based of their own scale weights while dressed in almost old garb, more or less. So I would almost say its really, genuinely a treat for like, all of the senses to see such history like this that you can still find happening here to this day! To be honest, you almost are there during opening season (which tends to be in late March until late September or early October, give or take), and also during special events on certain days? Obviously that almost gives that cheese event almost countless other reasons to see it and kind of stop on by for. Very fun all the way around actually!
