1. Samaria Gorge Hike: A Trek Through Crete’s Natural Wonder
Fancy a challenge? I mean, it is arguably the ultimate hike, Samaria Gorge beckons. Usually, people talk about it being Europe’s longest gorge, around 16km. Yet, you are likely more curious, what does it offer? As I was saying, the scenery is stunning, totally stunning. From towering cliffs (rather towering), just a little bit, actually, to crystal-clear streams, everything appears to come together to produce something magical. And it isn’t just for skilled ramblers; as a matter of fact, anyone with a reasonable fitness level will find this walk rewarding. Yet, just so you know, that descent can be tough on the knees! I mean, this may not suit all, that. This hike is more or less the main attraction. Just imagine ending your walk in a taverna next to the sea.
Insider Tip: So, wear sturdy shoes. That path is very uneven, or I might go further and say downright treacherous in spots. I mean, bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. And that early start is usually recommended to beat both heat and the crowds, still, the choice is all yours. Very rewarding indeed. If the full 16km seems a bit much, you know, plenty of tour operators will run you from one end to the other to save your knees. By the way, I should really point out, it gives important context and insight. Now, the big question – should you do a day trip to Knossos? Totally! A visit will arguably provide a really solid foundation in ancient Greece’s Minoan past and provide lots of material for that social media feed. Knossos Palace tour Full Review and Details
What to Expect: So, Knossos isn’t quite complete; some of that has been “restored”. Usually people will point that out. And by “restored” I might suggest that in a way, some spots are totally recreated, which can divide opinions a little. So, even though it is maybe something of a recreation, or, more or less, a reconstruction, you get to wandering through what was an ancient, thrumming heart of the Minoan people. Do you seek to combine that bit of beach with some local island intrigue? So, Spinalonga, that former leper colony, offers a compelling (kinda gloomy, kinda interesting) peek into history. Now, the boat trip to get there gives stunning views. Actually, of Crete’s coastline that shouldn’t be overlooked. So, exploring those abandoned buildings kinda makes you reflect about lives transformed by, well, isolation and disease. I mean, a tour guide is recommended; usually they help you, that is the guides, to fully comprehend the island’s significance, particularly from an outsider point of view. 5. Balos Lagoon: A Paradise of Blue and White
Desire those shades of turquoise water? Really really wanna know? Anyway, then Balos Lagoon it’s almost like that slice of paradise you see on the brochures. What I am saying is that it might just feel like someone went mad with the colors on the ocean and turned the contrast way up to eleven! As I was saying that water is super shallow! And it kinda fades through several shades of azure and it will be easy to picture yourself as a lottery winner after just a little wallow. Now, you will see the drive to get there might be challenging. I mean it is mostly on an unpaved road. Yet, very the scenery itself is really worth the trip. As a matter of fact there are options for cruises; obviously this provides a, well, more relaxed arrival. Anyway it arguably helps to see that vista as it should be seen, right? From the sea.Balos Lagoon cruise Full Review and Details
Travel Tip: Okay, if you, like your family plan to drive, then do arrive really early; parking becomes difficult to find in peak times. Basically I should say the roads will get busy from the buses arriving too, and this makes it harder for getting around when you leave the lagoon later on in that day. Yet I’m also able to say its possibly more sensible for you and the family to arrive by sea than try the treacherous terrain yourself! Be safe and make sensible decisions and, as a matter of fact it helps to travel with other families too! Safety in numbers as they say!
