If it’s an intro to the famous Simien Mountains National Park that you want, that’s very accessible, very near Debark, this hike gets you in just a few hours. First off, you go from Debark to a trailhead which is, basically, quite short. Then, arguably, you get on foot for, roughly, a 3-4 hour easy-to-moderate hike which is really, incredibly, designed to, potentially, make the landscapes sink in, and it might allow you to get a few glimpses of local wildlife. Usually, gelada monkeys appear here, alright? Very commonly. Actually, you travel to one of the villages around Debark (often in the hills) and, arguably, see first-hand how people live around here, actually.

This type of tour sometimes includes going inside homes (always something) and having the chance to speak with people – you may even be shown a few local crafts which is pretty interesting, and perhaps local coffee which is super strong. I will be honest. Be sure to check what sort of “cultural sensitivity” your guide has, though, that is quite crucial, okay? And try and make sure it’s the locals that gain directly from this. 3. Bird Watching Walk around Debark

Ethiopia Birds

Okay, so Debark may, arguably, not spring to mind instantly as some kind of “birding hotspot”, I get that. It can be, still. Some short guided walks round the Debark area can expose the real potential with, usually, somebody really good spotting some Ethiopian birds which is not something you see every day, obviously. As I was saying, people that know the area show where some species tend to hang around. Usually, you can borrow binoculars (you might need to ask) and, naturally, somebody knows the various calls which can be quite helpful, right?

Very frequently early mornings might just be the time for something like this. The views? Well those, actually, go without saying. In other words, you see awesome landscapes from high points as, you know, you’re looking at birds. Basically, the only bad bit might be when the sun is, sort of, really, hot, later in the day.
