Gunzburg Bavaria

1. Legoland Germany: A World of Fun

Legoland Germany

Of course, we’ve got to start with Legoland Germany, which, incidentally, is right on Gunzburg’s doorstep. It’s almost impossible to overlook. Now, this is very ideal for families. It really does offer a full day, packed with joy and creativity. That said, even grown-ups often find themselves a bit mesmerized by the intricate Lego models and the thrill rides. As a matter of fact, from the adrenaline-pumping rollercoasters to the fascinating Miniland showcasing miniature versions of famous cities, there’s something for everyone.

Think of it as a bunch of little adventures all rolled into one very big, brick-tastic day!

Consider buying tickets in advance to skip those very long queues, especially if you’re planning your trip during peak season. It’s almost always pretty busy, so you’re best off doing that. Also, maybe grab a park map as soon as you arrive, and really plan your day around the attractions that are most appealing to your group. You could even download the Legoland app, that is pretty neat. You can check wait times for rides and even see special events that might be happening during your visit. You know, stuff like that!

2. Ulm: History at Your Feet

Ulm Germany

Ulm, a little more or less about a 30-minute trip from Gunzburg, really does offer a fascinating blend of history, culture, and impressive architecture. That being said, the highlight has to be the Ulm Minster. Its spire, apparently, is the tallest church spire on the planet. And you know what? You can actually climb to the top, so that’s something! Then, brace yourself, because the climb is not for the faint of heart, yet the panoramic views from the top are, to be honest, truly rewarding.

After descending, give a walk through the Fischerviertel (Fishermen’s Quarter) a shot, a maze of very winding streets, super charming half-timbered houses, and picturesque bridges spanning the River Blau. It really does look like something from another time.

While you’re in Ulm, don’t skip a boat trip on the Danube. Actually, it provides a pretty unique perspective of the city. If you like shopping, you may want to stroll through the pedestrian zone. It really does have a ton of shops from big department stores to little shops owned by local people, so there’s plenty for shopping lovers, alright. Ulm also has a fair number of museums. So, if the weather is sort of “eh” you could always visit the Ulmer Museum or the Kunsthalle Weishaupt. Then, they offer pretty diverse collections of art and history, I would argue.

3. Augsburg: A City of Renaissance Splendor

Augsburg Germany

Alright, Augsburg, only a trip of roughly an hour from Gunzburg, is one of Germany’s oldest cities. Then, it boasts a very rich history that dates back to Roman times. You might want to start your tour at the Fuggerei. It is just a fascinating social housing complex. I mean, it’s basically the oldest in the world. You see, it was built in the early 16th century by the Fugger family for those in need, and actually, it is still in use. Just goes to show how durable those old places can be, no?

Make your way to the Rathausplatz, so you can check out the Augsburg Town Hall. With its amazing Golden Hall, it is almost certain to leave you in awe. The hall’s ceiling, very beautifully decorated and filled with gold, and the architecture itself are, arguably, nothing short of magnificent.

Also worth a visit is the Augsburger Puppenkiste, a puppet theater that, seemingly, has charmed generations of children and adults alike. If you’re into religious architecture, I think you may enjoy the Augsburg Cathedral. Then, its Romanesque and Gothic construction offers a deep look at the way that stuff has evolved. So, take your time to enjoy the blend of styles. Walk down Maximilianstraße, a grand boulevard lined with very striking Renaissance buildings and fountains, to soak in the city’s atmosphere.

4. Ottobeuren Abbey: Baroque Brilliance

Ottobeuren Abbey Germany

Fancy some Baroque art and architecture? Then, consider Ottobeuren Abbey, nearly an hour’s trip from Gunzburg. So, it’s sometimes regarded as one of the most spectacular Baroque abbeys anywhere. Actually, the basilica is nothing short of breathtaking, boasting ornate decorations, vibrant frescoes, and elaborate stucco work. Oh, and the detail. The detail is amazing! Take, basically, one of those guided tours so you don’t miss the library. Really, its impressive collection of books and manuscripts is just one other highlight.

Take time to stroll through the abbey gardens. Basically, they’re beautiful. I am serious. Especially, if the weather is cooperating, you may just find yourself there longer than planned.

The museum at Ottobeuren Abbey is, possibly, worth a stop too. What they’ve got on display is the abbey’s history and works of art. So, make sure you check it out. And after seeing the Abbey, that pretty village of Ottobeuren is there, with traditional Bavarian architecture. If you like local cafes or restaurants, this is the place for you, just as long as you’re comfortable chatting in German!

5. Harburg Castle: A Medieval Marvel

Harburg Castle Germany

For a glimpse into the medieval era, give a trip to Harburg Castle a shot. It’s roughly 45 minutes from Gunzburg. What’s very neat is that this is one of the oldest and very best-preserved castles in southern Germany. Also, situated high on a hill, it gives these great views of the very charming town of Harburg. To me, at least. See what you think.

Basically, wander through the castle grounds, checking out the different courtyards, towers, and the keep. Also, many of the castle’s rooms have fully working exhibits of furniture, tapestries, and artifacts. Very nifty, if you ask me.

Check out the castle tavern, that one seems pretty popular! Apparently, they serve traditional German fare. Not to mention beer. Because of that, it can make for a very pleasant break during your visit. When you have taken the time to experience the castle, spend some time in Harburg. It is one of those lovely little towns! Especially worth seeing is that old bridge crossing the Wörnitz river. I almost always tell myself that these day trips, they’re like chapters in an amazing book, where each one tells you about a little bit different kind of history.
