1. Lion & Safari Park Tour

Lion and Safari Park Johannesburg

Want to come face-to-face with South Africa’s magnificent wildlife, very? A visit to the Lion & Safari Park might be just the thing, seemingly! This park allows you, I mean gives you the chance to get pretty darn close to lions, giraffes, zebras, and heaps more, definitely! There are, like, different ways to see the wildlife, you know, and that ranges from guided game drives in open vehicles to getting to walk through, very carefully, areas where some smaller animals are just roaming around freely, definitely!

Why it’s awesome: The real clincher, actually, is how close you get to these big cats, quite! It’s really quite something to see lions lounging just a few feet away from you, not even kidding, very! Also, the park offers experiences that go beyond, you see, just seeing the animals, quite. You can do stuff like interact with, really get up close to, some of the baby animals, like playing with lion cubs, or get that classic, now maybe even a bit cliché, photo of you getting to pet a giraffe, to be honest.

Things to keep in mind: This tour, anyway, is super well-liked, right, it tends to get fully booked up rather fast, frankly! So, what you probably need to do is try to book your spot, really well in advance, frankly! And I should have said, it’s a place that really gets going in the mornings, in a way, so you might want to consider going there earlier in the day, very, to have, kind of, a much calmer, far less hurried experience.

2. Soweto Township Tour

Soweto Township Johannesburg

To really get what makes Johannesburg tick, what it means, at the end of the day, you’ve absolutely gotta visit Soweto, right? Soweto is this huge, incredibly historic township, where lots of pretty important folks, like Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, used to live, still! This tour isn’t just some sightseeing thing, it’s very much that you get to feel the energy and learn about the stories of the folks who fought really hard for freedom and who helped, sort of, shape South Africa as we know it, right.

What makes it cool: Getting to see Mandela’s house is already an awesome experience, like your going back in time, kind of, but there is loads more to see in Soweto, that is. You get, now, you get to walk around with, usually accompanied by, a guide, naturally, who has usually grown up in Soweto, arguably, and that really can change everything, in a way! You hear all these personal stories and stuff, that I mean that help you paint this, sort of, way clearer, quite a bit deeper, almost richer, version of the neighborhood.

Things to consider: It would almost definitely be respectful, alright, to dress somewhat, very conservatively when visiting Soweto, totally! And you really should make certain to ask for tips about respecting the locals and the rules when booking your tour, definitely! That will make your visit far better, a much more engaging one, to be sure, like!

3. Cradle of Humankind Tour

Cradle of Humankind Gauteng

Want to, kind of, wander back, or wander quite far back into ancient times, really far back, quite? The Cradle of Humankind is, kind of, like one of those must-do kind of visits, sort of, if you are, you know, even somewhat remotely interested in ancient fossils, very. It’s this awesome spot, rather packed, frankly, with tons of caves where scientists, basically, have discovered a bonkers amount of seriously old fossils – some go back millions of years ago, absolutely!

The clincher: What truly lights this tour on fire, you could say, very, is seeing the Sterkfontein Caves, absolutely! That’s, like, one of the most significant spots, arguably, where they found the very famous “Mrs. Ples” and “Little Foot” fossils – they are quite famous and very unique fossils to the world of palaeontology. What is great is there are tons of exhibits and really great tours around there that take all of this, very cool information and manage to, arguably, turn it into stories, fairly simple stories that just about anyone can dig – it’s absolutely accessible.

Good to know: Because the Cradle, just, has so much ground to cover, in fact, it makes sense, rather, to wear seriously comfy shoes when visiting the site, seriously! And hey, a lot of those caves, those really good ones, by the way, can get, like, super tight, and seriously cramped, you know, for anyone suffering a bit from claustrophobia – you will need to know that now and possibly think again.

4. Apartheid Museum Tour

Apartheid Museum Johannesburg

Want to truly grasp, sort of, the story and struggle, in fact, of South Africa? A tour of the Apartheid Museum will very probably do just that, quite! The museum really goes into showing the history of the apartheid era – that being a system where only some had legal rights, absolutely – which really digs very deep on all the nasty injustices, arguably, that occurred at the time, absolutely! You get to see exhibits stuffed, now filled to the brim, by the way, with photos, personal stories, and some really shocking documents that really lay out exactly, in granular form, just how vicious this system of hate, frankly, really was.

The bit that’s different: What really packs the punch, actually, at this particular museum is that they, in a way, recreate a lot of the actual lived-through stuff, in a way. What I am suggesting is, you could say, you will even experience the beginning where you are, by the way, assigned a race upon entry which definitely demonstrates, alright, quite brutally what everyday life felt like when racism, blatant racism was, you could say, pretty normalized, absolutely!

Things to think about: Brace yourself because, at the end of the day, it can get very emotional, you know, what you find inside there, what it portrays, clearly! Allow at least, you know, about half a day, you see, to slowly make your way through, just sort of pause for thought from time to time, to process all those stories, alright! Thinking on all the personal accounts can take its time to percolate, absolutely! That said, do check ahead of your visit, very, because every now and then, naturally, certain exhibits might be closed, fairly! As good as the museum is, that will just help set expectations right before you go in, totally!

5. Gold Reef City Theme Park Tour

Gold Reef City Johannesburg

Want to maybe blend just a dash of historical intrigue together with pretty thrilling, you might say death-defying rides? Gold Reef City can maybe blend just those sorts of things for you, potentially, kind of, in the same way! It’s this fun theme park, sort of based on, as your starting point, around an old gold mine, potentially, and you could easily spend there, by the way, a completely great day getting yourself immersed with gold mining from way back, or letting your screams carry into the Jo’burg sky on every gut-churning, nail-biting ride you’ll see, usually, if you like roller coasters, potentially!

Its selling point: Here’s where Gold Reef city becomes almost unlike any theme park out there; in other words, at the end of the day, they will actually, still, take you deep underground in to a proper real gold mine shaft and will then show you just how gold used to get dug out and refined way back when. Outside of that mine, sort of, there are all of these pretty bonkers thrill rides for every adrenaline junky there. Loads for small kids too, naturally.

What’s worth remembering: Be certain to maybe peek at, very briefly, to get an, at least superficial, view of ride closures ahead of heading out for the day. That helps skip just that disappointment when your favorite, you could say ‘absolutely needed’ roller coaster has decided to not work that day. And I’d go so far as saying to wear, maybe, those most comfy, maybe absolutely great pair of walking shoes because all those fun gold dig sites and super fun rides, arguably, sprawl right out very, very far across the complete park.
